The USS Abraham Lincoln will be deployed for Christmas and has given approval for the ship to receive pillowcases while on deployment.   That will be 5,000 or more strong.

The main postings for this project will be in the Lincoln group under the thread called "The Lincoln Family Love Pillowcase Project".

I will update here as well so you don't have to join the Lincoln group.

Let us know what you can do to help us get the ship done!

Welcome Lisa! What we are doing right now is sewing pillowcases and just holding on to them until the final details are made for this project. They will be mailed so that they will be received by Christmas. If you have any questions just ask. If you need to know more about instructions on sewing the pillowcases check out the Heads At Ease group and in the discussions you will find the updated instructions. Sue is currently out of town but will be checking back in on us soon I am sure.

Ms. Wilcox,

Good afternoon.

I am afraid that the information I can pass to you is limited.

I can tell you that there will be approximately 4500-5000 sailors onboard over
the Christmas holidays. Given our deployment schedule and the constant
transfer of personnel, I really can't give you any more specific a number than
that.

As for the squadron/ship specific numbers of personnel, I know you have been trying very hard to receive this and going through many people but I'm afraid that is in
the realm of operational security and I can't pass it along. We can not give anyone that information. I am terribly sorry.

Command Judge Advocate
USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN 72)

Here's how I feel about this:

I say chuck the project. They can't help, then so be it. We can just do the units that we have commited to and that we can get information on.

Besides ladies, not enough of the Lincoln moms or wives have come on board for this. I can't do anymore.
The Nukes will be impossible to do unless we have a nuke wife or mom on the Lincoln. Even then getting an exact number may not be possible. I'm not sure why the number of nukes on a carrier is considered a secret since the information on the propulsion plant has been on the Discovery and Military channels.
I believe that the Navy does not believe that doing a carrier is possible and wants out. So they pushed it to the JAGs to find a way to stop the project.
I think it is time to find a group in Afghanistan or Iraq for Christmas. There is a group that is dealing with wounded Marines that could put the pillowcases to good use.
AMEN!
Well, Lyn I am leaning towards that. I have to leave for work pretty soon. If anyone has the time please go to the Pillowcases for Christmas thread to read up.

and Lyn, I think you are right. The navy wife in charge of the project: her husband is no longer on the ship and I think that is the big problem.

I do have 1 other possible source that I have written to this morning. I will wait to hear from him.
Nuke mom here, but not a Lincoln mom, usually runs around 450 - 500. Did you help with N4M Holiday Project? Breakdowns are going to be similar between vessels. Just a thought. Are you in contact with the ship's ombudsman as your go-between? Just asking. Sad issue here, as they most certainly do not have 4,500 - 5000 officers on these ships -- that's everyone from the top down & including airwings & other special crews. What about a Chaplain contact on the ship as well? Could give you a better idea of a specific group, or he could hold and give out to those that don't get mail. Still, every ship has it's own environment & set of rules as to what is and is not okay. Some will allow the pcs and others will not. Hope this gets worked out.
My imput on this... I Agree with Sue, Just do what is committed to already. Doing anAfghani or Iraq group for xmas would be better. That ship doesn't sound like it wants any involvement , getting the chaplain on board would be good, he might know where the need is.,, It was a nice thought . Operational security.. yeh right, All we are asking for is some numbers so we know what we are dealing with, We aren't asking for personal info... we just want to make some pillowcases to make some guys and gals feel a sense of home.. we don't want to have someone feel left out.....
Friends, As each day passes and I get another day older...and hopefully wiser, I TRY to look at closed doors as just that.
However, we all know that God has something else 'BETTER for us to do.
Even if it is just some "rag-tag rinky-dink" little unit, then THEY are who needs and would appreciate anything we could do. Just my input. Making Sue or anyone else spend MORE time on this (WASTE more time on this) seems unproductive.
I trust your decision.
Sue, what are we committed to doing? I know we said we would do the medical unit, nukes, fire fighters and some culinary specialists in addition to some of the squadrons of our sailors. Here's my personal bias. First of all, you know my feelings on adopting ships. That being said, we should definitely do the squadrons. If Jackie is in charge of doing the culinary specialists and has a contact for distribution, and if we can doing half, let's do that. Other than that, I would stop there. I agree with Lyn that I would not put the officers, e.g., command, over enlisted. I do feel that doing a unit in the sand box would be much appreciated and do more to brighten their day.
My son is on the ship and I WILL be doing his squadron. I committed that to him before he left and I keep my word. After I have finished with his squadron, anything else I do will go into any other group they need to go for the sailors of the USS Abraham Lincoln. My son along with 4999 others will be away from their families at Christmas and I will do all I can to let them know that they are loved and appreciated.
okay, here's the deal. I sent out my SOS this morning for a contact thru someone else. I personally need a new assurance from the command that the sailors are able to have the pcs.

If we get that thru my contact, we can do VFA 34, and 80 of the culinary specialists (which are all being made by my friend Barb). I will send Cassie her special pc regardless of the outcome.

The medical unit is off the table. We have a new plan for those angel pcs. The firefighters: well, Granny and I have both tried to get infor from Ben's college buddy. He doesn't respond. I will give him one more try and then that is off the table.

The nukes are gone as well as command. I have talked to a couple of other navy moms who we could do if we get the information.

If Kim, Alaina or Dolly need help with their units, we can do that.

BUT I want a new confirmation that the command is on board with this. The deployment has changed many times since that letter was written in May. We need a new comfirmation.

Lyn, I want to do the wounded marines in Afghanistan, starting now. I have pcs coming out of my ears. Please start a thread for it and let's get those guys some comfort.

When I shared with my hubby last night about the judge advocate's letter, he said "we should be sending the pcs to the ones in harm's way-Afghanistan".

So elt's get ti done!

Charlotte, if you want to give me information on the 45 in your daughter's unit, I will send a box to her with colored pictures and stuff for each one. I will also do the pcs for them if need be.

Ladies, this is my heart. But if the Lincoln project doesn't fly, then it doesn't. I have not given up yet, but without better information and cooperation from the command, I willl not let these pcs sit around in a room and take a chance. Can't do it.

We have a fabulous track record for getting the job done. We'll give it a few more days and then decide.
you are wonderful! pray that I can get the assurance that I need for us to go forward with these units.
