I was all gung ho when I joined this group 6 months ago, but then got increasing overwhelmed, felt like I was lost, didn't have time to read all the posts, etc, etc, etc.  Basically, I was avoiding the inevitable.

My daughter left on August 4.  I cried so much that I'm pretty sure I could have remedied the California drought.  I still have NOT received a letter from her.  I'm getting very discouraged.

I feel like I'm so out of the loop and not up-to-par as I should be as a NavyMom.  I'm so proud of her, but I feel like a total failure.  Can someone please give me baby steps to start off with?

Thank you for the kind words.  We live in Ohio, and today is Thursday.  I'm hoping there's a letter when I get home.  Her PIR is Oct 2.  I've written her every day since she's left and started mailing every day (except Sundays, of course) since I got her address.

This site is just very big, so I don't know where to start, what to join, etc.  Thank you for your kind words and encouragemnt.  Go Navy!

Go Navy! Beat Army!

Heidi - you are not a failure first of all. You've raised a daughter who wants to serve her country, that is a big success in my book.  I do not post often and do not have the time to read all the posts, so you are not alone in that challenge.  I'd put money on how many others feel that way.  Our PIR date is 8/28 and I am still getting all the info straight in my head.  Baby steps, the Facebook posts that show up from the site leaders are most informative; feel free to contact them directly with any questions, they respond very quickly considering the electronic traffic they must see.  Read the Family Guidebook, the the link to the "day by day' life of our SR's to the right of the NavyForMoms (N4M) main page.  Over the next several weeks, read this info often and then pick something new to read on the N4M page.  Like mom2smrefk said, write your daughter as often as possible, it's good for both of you.  I hope this helps a little; you are not alone.  You are not a failure.  And, I'm in Florida, so when you stop crying, I'll send some of our afternoon thunderstorms your way!

Thank you!  I will start with your suggestions.  I just am having such a hard time navigating this site, where to go, what to read, etc.  I will start with what you've listed.  Thank you again!

I was surprised to find out how many letters from my family were returned to them, never seen by me.

NavyBrat, Typically, letters are not returned unless they had the wrong address or you had left the RTC.

Heidi:   GO BUCKEYES...............!!    Cheers.

Let's Go Blue!

Heidi -

Hi. I am a "veteran mom" (volunteer who has gone through this just like you are now) on the PIR (Pass-in-Review) Groups. Pass-in-Review is the formal inspection of the new Sailors that happens at Graduation.

There are only two Groups I would recommend right now for you and I will talk about them below.

I see you have joined your PIR group. This Group is made up of moms and loved ones who also have Recruits with that PIR date. Within that group is a lot of information in the:

PAGES section,

the Main wall of the Group - where you can post Comments to all of the Members of the Group and ask questions for the veteran moms to answer,

and Division Discussions for the Brother Divisions in the TG (Training Group - the TG is made up of all of the Recruits within a TG separated out into Divisions. Brother Divisions are two consecutive Divisions that train together for the duration of Boot Camp.)

I will post direct links that you can click on here to see those three items above:

Main "Wall" of the PIR Group:

PIR 10/02/2015 TG 47 - 11 Divisions (327-336, and 947) Each recruit...

  • As you scroll down the Page read the info in the Text box where you Countdown to PIR clock is as well.
  • Below that will be OPSEC guidelines and the Weather widget
  • Below that is the Discussion Forum (the Brother divisions links)
  • then below that is the Comment Box for the Main wall of the Group to add a comment or question.
  • Below that are the ten most current comments on Page 1. The pages after that will have older posts.

Here is the link to your Recruits Brother Division discussion:

Ship 12 (USS Triton) Divisions 327 and 328 (Brother Divisions)

This is where you can further connect with moms and loved ones within your recruits Division.

This is the link for the PAGES section of your PIR group:

PAGES for 10/02/2015 PIR

  • Pages is where we load lots of info for you. It remains on the group and is like a reference section for the members.

The other Group that is helpful is Boot Camp Moms and Loved ones. Here is teh direct link:

Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones)

It works just like your PIR group does mentioned above (The Discussion Forum will be different as they are all sorts of Discussions that moms start). The PAGES section has a LOT of info too.

ALL of the links I posted will open into another tab on your computer so you don't lose this one.

Remember if you click something on here your pretty safe...most things are undo-able simply by clicking your "back" arrow on your computer :-)

Just bite off as much as you can chew and PLEASE don't hesitate to ask questions. There are NEVER any dumb ones and you are certainly NOT a failure :-D.

It's a big site and was meant to cover all Sailors and their moms (and Loved ones!) in the Navy throughout their careers...hence all the info.

Please don't hesitate to ask. I can Friend you on here if you like to guide you through.

Hi Heidi,

I am new to this as well and I do understand how you are feeling regarding being overwhelmed. My son left August 27 so, unfortunately, I don't have much to add in the way of offering you guidance but, you do have my support. I never had any experience with military life so this is all so new and foreign to me. There is so much to learn, it is truly like a different culture with the different vernacular and rules and regulations. That being said, this is why you must reach out. This site is marvelous in offering suggestions, guidance and support. Facebook also has a great group, the Navy Recruit Training Command (RTC). Be kind to yourself, Heidi. This new journey is not only your daughters but, yours as well.

Heidi,

Join in on the chat that takes place in the main room.  It is awesome. I have learned so much from so many of them.  It's a fun place to come and talk about how ur day is going, if ur having a hard time, or just to let us know you got a letter.

Hope to see you in the Main Room!

Laura (My daughter graduated 3 weeks ago.)

I just got back from PIR.  My son talked several times about how hard it was to find time to write.  He thanked me for all the letters I sent, and apologized for not writing more often.  He talked about the little free time and how much he had to do when he had it.  Maybe that helps.  But hang in there.
