Thank you, KiddGreen. I guess all we can do is just support them. Our FR has had bunkmates of all different ratings. I know what you mean about making friends, that worried me too. Ours has made friends from all over, and thanks to social media, he has kept up with them, as they are scattered. One on deployment, one on the west coast, one on the east coast. Congratulations on to your new sailor!

KiddGreen1978,

They do not get a choice of what ship or bunkmates that they will have.  My son has been at A school since June and has many different bunk mates.  aHe has kept in touch with his buddys from RTC.  They talk and get together often.

Hello, My son is a FC, just out of BC. Any information on the particulars of what to expect next will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Blackbirdmom, I'm sorry to hear about your Sailor being delayed and reassigned. That happened to my first Sailor, but for a different reason. He was slated to go to Japan! But he didn't do well on the last weeks of class and got pushed back. He's now stationed at Naval Station Norfolk.

My Sailors PIR is this Friday. He's made a buddy and they were wondering if they can be bunk mates after BC. Do they have to be the same rate to bunk together? I'm just excited he made a friend! Lol. That's such a mom concern.

My son is due to finish zschool here in the next month and half and he received his orders about 3 weeks into schooling. His ship will be at sea when he is due to report at base but since they will be making port within a few weeks of his report date he is to just wait for them at the base. So I think every situation is different all depending. I know he is bunking with a fellow sailor who is still waiting for his orders.

You're almost at the boot camp finish line. Congratulations to your new sailor!

It does get easier after PIR, because they can call or text or email a lot more.  How long his school is depends on his rating and on how much hold time he might have. Our FR has had hold before each class, sometimes a couple of days, sometimes a couple of weeks. The longest was almost 3 weeks.

Oh I see, I know that my son has said after BC and graduation his school will start Sept. 10th but will go all the way up to Dec. I believe he said, does that sound about right? but after that I dont know. I guess we need to talk. we were just concerned at this time for him to get done with BC which he will graduate this Friday. Thanks for sharing BlackbirdMom.

Phonenixmom - our sailor started his A school a couple of weeks after PIR. His A school consists of 4-5 classes. Your sailor's rating will depend on how long his school lasts and which classes he will take. Some sailors receive their orders at the end of BC, some at the beginning of A school, some later. Their orders are where they will be stationed after their school is completed. They are assigned a ship, which is assigned to a certain base. Not everyone gets orders before the end of A school, but I think most do. Deployments are different. If the ship they are assigned to is on deployment, a sailor will meet their ship, and finish deployment with that ship. If their ship is not deployed, the sailor will report to their new duty station and work on their ship/base. Does that help?

I've only gotten a little information by text, he will call tonight and give more details. He and the other 2 guys went to the CPC yesterday to appeal, and hopefully be able to get into the class, but that appeal may have been denied. Because Hawaii is OCONUS, he is required to take 15 leave days before reporting. With his school finishing later, he would only have 9 leave days before having to report.
