Love- I'm sorry for your son but I'm glad you mentioned that. I had thought the same thing when the mom had mentioned not hearing from her son. Those things are taken pretty serious [ having a phone on you or just failing inspection] so the consequence can be no contact with family. We can be assured that if there was something serious going on [ like an illness] we would be contacted.

Thank you so much for the advise...I try to go with the flow but I have always been such a planner that this is driving me crazy!!

zmansmom....exactly what lori said....My son PIR'd on 1/14....he moved over to A school on the 19th so I then sent his laptop, ipod, and cell to him.  He contacted me this morning at 6am, less than a week after moving over and stated he was allowed his civilian clothes and could I please send them.  There are many variables at play, my son was told it would be at least three weeks until he could have civies...and that was even changed.  Be very flexible, things change all the time!

Welcome zmansmom! You don't need to worry about what they can and can't do as they will be well informed before PIR. If you have questions all of us on here are more than happy to answer whatever you come up with! As to bringing his things- it depends on whether he is grad and go. If he is staying at GL but won't be moving over for a couple of days you could store his stuff at the lock and go. But bring his electronics as he will want to use them after his PIR. As to whether it will be 6 weeks that all depends on his hold times for ATT and when he "phases up" and can have them. There are so many variables that it is hard to predict exactly.

My son's PIR is 2/11/11 and I have heard so many different stories on what they can and can not do...I need help!!!  Should I bring his clothes, phone and laptop and put them in the Lock and Go or will it really be 6 weeks before he can go get them?

DebBon- it does take some getting used to all the terms. ET- electronic technician FC- fire control. Did your son get a Blue Jacket Manuel before he left? It's a Navy handbook that talks about everything and tells you what rates are what. Very helpful. When I was visiting my son in GL last Oct he took me to Naperville town to the little shops there. We had a great time. I stayed with a friend in Romeoville. It must be nice for you to be so close to GL as then he will be able to come home when he has phase 2.

Just a thought and a warning:  Global service is not truly global.  Sailors should review contracts very carefully before turning it on any phone and using it in a foreign port.  There's been more than one mom here bewailing their sailor's $2,000+ bill.  The roaming charges are killer.  Every sailor should call their provider before deploying and make arrangements for a military suspension on their phones.  Just because you can turn it on and use it, doesn't mean you'll enjoy paying the bill.

I ordered chandler a laptop from verizon and it came with the media card built in. I paid 35.00 for it and its a 2 year contract. He pays 50 a month for the service and it is global.

I have no idea what ET or FC are or even AECF.  Sorry just thought I would reach out.

Sandy, is your son ET or FC? I think mine will be ET, he is AECF....  When was your PIR, I am still trying to get the hang of it!
