DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

Any faimlies with sailors on carriers? My son is just going to report to the Nimitz... just thought it would be nice to get to know other parents whose sailors are on them and how much contact do you get?

Got it! Thanks, Sandra, that is very clever! We will come up with some codes like that. I don't want to violate any rules. Can you post pics of him on here now that he is out of basic? I would like to post some wedding pics but again don't want to violate any rules that I don't know exist. He is an AO.. not a SEAL or anything.

Once they deploy, info will be hard to get.  Phone calls will be sporadic, remember there are around 5000 on the boat and few phones.  He will be working 12 on 12 off once they are underway and he will be just plain worn out at the end of his shift.  Emailing is the best way to for the two of them to communicate, but sometimes the net is down on the ship and there are not a lot of computers either.  Ya'll should email every day, he may not answer and when he does they will be short.  You will probably hear from him once he hits port.  One of the best ways we found to keep up with when they would hit port and when was to establish a list of common dates relevant to your family and some type of nickname for ports they may hit.  Like we are going to be at Dundee's place (Australia)  close to Mom's birthday.  Doesn't really violate OPSEC.  Hope this helps.

Thank you, Pat and Sandra. I am new to this. He has just joined the fleet from A School and have no idea what to expect. He is newly married and his wife has decided not to move out to the base since he really won't be there. They are devastated, needless to say. Any input on what to expect or how to best support them both would be welcome!

Sandra, thanks for mentioning the Navy dads site. I know my husband would love to be a part of that.

We are pretty much going to have two carriers around the sandbox at least 9 mos out of the year which does not include usually another one making a West Pac.  Plus the GW coming in and out of Japan.  If you subscribe to Navy Times every week they put a world map showing where all the ships are generally located.  My husband who is ex navy reads it religiously.  He is also on Navy Dads.

Dana,  Go to the Stennis Group with all the hearts. That's the active one. The other is not.

Comment by Rod on July 6, 2011 at 3:34pm
My son served on the Stennis for 5 years and made 3 deployments.  He is an ABH2 currently in Meridian MS and headed to the IKE in January.  He was real disappointed he could not get back to the West Coast, but it was the IKE or the Washington.

Holly - Are you a member of the Stennis Family Group?  I have requested to be in the group twice, but have not heard back.  Dana
