Any faimlies with sailors on carriers? My son is just going to report to the Nimitz... just thought it would be nice to get to know other parents whose sailors are on them and how much contact do you get?

IMPORTANT:

This morning I received a copy of an e-mail that was sent out by an IT department at the University of Florida. There was a link in the e-mail about security on copiers. I strongly encourage each of you to watch the video on the link. Did you know that copiers have hard drives and that a copy of whatever is copied, faxed or scanned is kept on the hard drive? This is a tremendous identify theft potential. It is unnecessary because copier companies offer a component that would remove this information and protect us. The component costs around $500 per machine. We need to start a campaign to get Congress to require this component on all machines. I don't want to be an alarmist but not only could it be an identify theft risk for you, it could also be a security risk for our nation. Please watch the video.

When underway, if they want to make a phone call they have to have them. With deployment its a little different. They have to have them to use the phone while NOT in port but when they ARE in port some sailors opt to use the ship phone instead of a cell phone because the charges can be very outrageous!

Mostly for underways or deployments but if your sailor just so happens to not have a cell phone and needs to use the pay phone on the ship they have to use these specific phone cards.

I am new to being a carrier mom, why do they need phone cards? is this for when they deploy? Thanks to all for your patience while i learn the ropes.

Just little FYI for everyone here if you don't know already. I haven't personally used it but there is a website where you can buy phone cards and have them sent to your loved one on the ship. https://shop.aafes.com/scs/default.aspx. You may have to copy and paste this to the web browser. Once you get that page up, click where it says "Purchase a prepaid card." Look for the cards that says "AT&T Ship-to-Shore Prepaid Phone Cards" ONLY. This is real important. You can order 1 card or sets of 10,25,50,100 or 250 cards. The price of each set gets pricey as you go up. Once you know which one you want, click on the "Purchase now" underneath the card(its in blue). This should bring up a page where you can enter your Sailor's mailing address on the ship. It HAS to be the address on the ship so make sure you and your Sailor verify their address. Once you do that then click "Continue" and I'm sure from there it will ask for your payment option. Hope this helps and if you have any more questions please feel free to ask!

Hi everyone! I am new to the group. My husband is on the USS Harry S. Truman so I hope by being here I can keep in touch with others who have a loved one on the ship as well.
