Any faimlies with sailors on carriers? My son is just going to report to the Nimitz... just thought it would be nice to get to know other parents whose sailors are on them and how much contact do you get?

I'm really sorry about that. I have been reliving my trip this week. We were still out to sea today.

Military phone card. It's a ship to shore card they can use while at sea. The connection is usually awful but it's such a joy to hear their voice it doesn't matter. You can get them online at https://shop.aafes.com/scs/product.aspx

Marianne, it's my pleasure. I love information and love to pass it on. And we want to see pictures and a full report.

Barbara, is it too late to appeal the decision?

Debbie,
I got a passport for just that reason. Sprint also will put the cell service on a military phone, even though it was in my name. My son used ship to shore cards while underway and never called while in port anyway.

Debbie, we got passports once we knew our son was going to deploy. just for the reason that you mentioned. remember they take about 6-8 weeks, so start early.

they can't use the phones on the ship, no signal-too much steel and the interence thing. But as we pulled out of Hawaii we all ever using them for awhile and then as we approached San Diego, the phones were brought out again.
I was glad that my son had his when we did the tiger cruise and trying to meet up with him in Waikiki. He put his on hold too-that was Verizon.

your sons are right, you don't really feel the ship move. I did feel motion when trying to get to sleep, but that's it.
Even on the flight deck I didn't feel motion-but it is windy up there. And we tigers were kept so busy with tours and stuff, I didn't have much time to think about it.

Marianne, you sure will! I was nervous. I am not a fan of water and the thought of being on a ship in the middle of the ocean was overwhelming at times. I told myself "Sue, get a grip. Are you going to miss the trip of a lifetime cause of alittle water issue?" But truth be told, I wasn't sure if I could make myself board that ship.

BUT when we met our son at Waikiki Beach and his 2 buddies, well, all my fear vanished. Cause I was just so happy to see him and those 2 other boys. And then I saw that ship! Oh my, it is big.

I was also worried about seasickness. Well, I had many people praying for me and I not only was not afraid, but I wasn't sick a bit! In fact, when we got on the flight deck, I didn't want to come down. haha. I loved it up there. I loved the whole trip. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

Odd thing though. Both my husband and I got veritgo/motion sickness after the cruise. We were so exhausted. We drove to SD, so once we got our car, I laid down and slept awhile and we took turns driving. I had veritgo for 4 days once we got home. I felt like I was still on the ship and it wasn't pleasant. So happy I didn't have that on board.
And I had lots of bruises. Steel doesn't give. haha. We had smooth sailing.

I showered in the morning. I got up about 4 am to beat the rush as I met my son every morning about 6:10 am.
bring a pair of sweatpants to sleep in! one night I had on: sweatpants, tank top, t shirt, flannel, socks, my flannel sheet, regular sheet, wool blanket and couldn't get warm!
