Any faimlies with sailors on carriers? My son is just going to report to the Nimitz... just thought it would be nice to get to know other parents whose sailors are on them and how much contact do you get?

I did not bring a hairdryer. I wore it in a ponytail or headband and let it go like that. I've walked for years and was surprised that the stairs didn't bother me, but all the standing did. It's so cold in the berthing compartments that you will not want to hit the rack with wet hair, so turn the hand dryers up and dry it that way.

you will have to bring the hairdryer. other sailors will have them, but you'd have to ask to use it.
Do you have a female sponsor? have you been in touch with her? My son got my sponsor's email and I asked her all sorts of questions. Very helpful young lady. I didn't ask about a hair dryer, cause I am a wash and go person.
And I hear you about the fitness thing. The prospect of a tiger cruise in Feb 2006 when my son left for boot camp, got me to join Curves and lose 52 pounds before I actually took one in 10-08.
so good going!

I power walked for 2 months before going. that made a difference! and wear comfortable shoes-you know they have to be enclosed.
Vickie, a duffel is the way to go. We spent 1 1/2 days in Hawaii before boarding the ship. So clothing was a bit of a challenge, but I just tried to make everything do double duty.

Travel light! I took a duffle bag instead of a suitcase which worked out great, but even so carrying it down the ladders and back up again when we left was a lot of work.

And I had thought that my son would be able to escort us off the ship to help. He was getting off in San Diego, but not until all the tigers and sailors who were going on leave got off.
So just bring what you can carry comfortabably. When do you leave? a year ago we were preparing to go. We flew to Hawaii on 10-1.
how long will you be in Hawaii before gettting on the ship?

Do you want it to just keep in touch for email or do you need it for business.
If it is just for email, I wouldn't bring it. you won't be able to use it on the ship. You will have your rack for storage, which is under the bed-you lift the bed up, and there are divided compartments to store things. You will need to bring a lock for that.
You might have a footlocker also, at the end of the cube. depends on your berthing. That's a decent size and you will need a lock for that.
Travel light. tha'ts my advice. Remember, you have to be able to carry what you bring.
While I had 3 sailors helping me get on the ship and up to my berthing, leaving the ship was a whole different story. Many of the sailors are leaving that day too, so they need to carry their own things.
My female sponsor came back and helped me carry my things down. Fortunately one of my son's buddies on going on leave in San Diego and he was so kind to help. BUT if not, I would have been in a tough place, cause I had too much and too big of luggage. Thought the wheely thing was great until I got on the ship. If I did it again, I would carry a seabag type thing.
Purse, do something that can be carried across your body-that was a smart move.
Anyway, back to the laptop. Most hotels, including the Navy lodge has computers that you can use for email. The one on Ford Island did. You won't have time for movies.
You can also go to the library on the ship and use one of theirs if need be.

Suzann, they have off site storage for the cars. They can't keep them on base (at least in Bremerton).
Comment by Sue-Pillowcase lady on August 27, 2009 at 11:48pm
will pray for them.
