Any faimlies with sailors on carriers? My son is just going to report to the Nimitz... just thought it would be nice to get to know other parents whose sailors are on them and how much contact do you get?

Hi Marianne, no bugging, glad to help. do you have a female sponsor? I did, and I bugged her with tons of questions. She was a girl in my son's shop, so I was able to email with her. That might help if you could do that.
I think for the link for the Penny Press (the Lincoln's newsletter) got up about 2 months out from the TC.
Does your carrier have a newsletter? Check that out for a link. Mine even provided a very nice map of Pearl Harbor.

I have stairs at home, I ran up and down over and over. The stairs didn't seem to bother me, it was the standing that did it.

Marianne, when is your cruise? And if you go to the ship's newsletter, there should be a tiger cruise link on it. There was for the link-lots of great information.
I took 3 pairs of pants, wore the same comfy jeans the whole time. Comfortable, enclosed walking shoes are required.
For 1 month before I left, I power walked 4 or 5 times a week in my neighborhood. If you aren't used to stairs, go to a mall and practice walking up and down.

Also, I bought a pair of good sneakers a week or so before and broke them in since I'm not used to being on my feet so much. What a lifesaver! Comfortable shoes are an absolute must! I'm so excited for you, you'll have a wonderful time! Don't miss all the flight deck action.

Marianne, I took a squashable duffle bag and I actually had plenty of room under the rack for my stuff. Before I went to bed for the night I took everything I would need the next morning and put it on my rack. Everyone is trying to get ready at the same time and it's very crowded. Just remember not to put anything you may need during the night - flashlight, water, glasses by your feet - you can't reach them unless you get out. Wow, talk about tight quarters! I lost weight, my husband gained weight - he couldn't get over all the food so he just ate! My legs were killing me the first two days, that's what a desk job does! Also, you won't need as many pants as the list suggests.

And not until they are about 3 months away from coming home. checking with the ship's ombudsman is the best thing.

Barbara, I am so sorry to hear that! My husband was worried about that too, but they passed him. did you have surgery?
Marianne, just remember that you have to be able to carry it. While you will most likely have lots of help getting onto the ship, getting off you will be on your own. I had big suitcases and in hindsight, wouldn't take them again. My sister has a large backpack on wheels.

I took a tiny flashlight and used it the whole time, but there is one in the tiger backpack. I also borrowed one of those backpack purses, it was great. I was freezing the entire time so bring a couple sweatshirts and a lightweight jacket. I also had a small fleece throw I used at night and wore sweatpants and socks. I found after a couple of cold showers that if you have time shower in the middle of the day. We didn't get much time with our son as he was mess cranking and he didn't get any down time so be prepared. Also, there weren't any chairs, I would have brought on one of those small folding stools.

And the veritgo issue. I didn't have 1 bit of trouble while on the ship, but had 4 days of it when I got home. It was so weird. didn't bother me when I drove, but walking around the house-I looked like I was drunk.

I don't know where you would put games either! a deck of cards sounds about right.
Yes, there is downtime and you don't have to take the tours, but would highly recommend them. One afternoon, the 3 of us got chairs and sat near the hanger bay doors and just talked. That was the best afternoon.
I got a personal tour of one of the galleys. I was fascinated by the huge machinery. I imagine it was really loud in the gear room! did you have to wear a craninal?
It's fun to talk to the sailors and be prepared to wait in line for chow. That's also a great time to talk to the sailors then. I made it a point to thank every sailor that I could for their service, especially in the gallies.
