Any faimlies with sailors on carriers? My son is just going to report to the Nimitz... just thought it would be nice to get to know other parents whose sailors are on them and how much contact do you get?

Hi Marianne, Ben was on the Abraham Lincoln. They deployed on 3-17-08 and returned on 10-8-08. Is that the same ship as Tim?
Donna, Ben did that sand surfing tour in Dubai too. He only went down once because the sand was so hot. haha. I got a kick out of that. He liked the 4 wheeling and they went to a river with rocks that they could jump off. He usually went in groups of 3 or 4.

Hi proud ABH mom,
I'll tell you the little that I know. My son was deployed last year on the Lincoln.
They went to Singapore, Dubai twice and Thailand on their way home. they were usually there for 4 days. Everyone took a turn to do watch and then got liberty.
Yes, they stay in groups. They are also told to not wear uniforms or any clothing that says USA etc.
There are also service projects that the sailors can get involved in. He should ask his chief or the chaplain about those.
As far as money goes, at least in Singapore, there was an office, kind of like the USO that he was able to buy disposable cell phones and then exchange into money.
He's on the Lincoln at the moment and is sleeping as he works nights. But I'll write later and ask him for sure on the money. He brought some foreign money home and he's pretty careful. So doubt that he would use a card in a foreign port.
I would recommend that you get a passport. Our son's deployment last year pushed us to get one. Just in case something happened and we needed to travel, we wanted to be prepared. That helped to ease our minds about him being on the other side of the world.
Hope this helps and I am sure someone else has more info than me.
My son started on the flight deck, but then got put into another area, which he likes better.

you know, even on the ship, you get a rythm on how to walk. so many steps and lift your leg. Ben said a friend of his hit his head on a pipe going down a stairway and fell the rest of the way. that could happen so easy.

Ladies -

Please read over our site guidelines (there are links on the front page) before posting. Dates regarding ship movements are not allowed to be posted until they are public information. I've went in and deleted comments that revealed too much information.

i think it's just because we love our sailors and it's one of the few ways to stay in touch with them by sharing with others but of course policy rules

We went to our son's deployment in March 2008. We were so happy to go and I would encourage all parents to do it if possible. We got to spend some time with Ben and 2 of his buddies, which he would share a cube with. That was really special. They didn't mann the rails, but Ben stayed up top until the ship was turned to head out of the harbor. We were interviewd by NBC news while we were there.

Oh my gosh! Thank your son for me, it gives me goosebumps, I can't tell you how excited I am to see this picture. My son was manning the rails today. This is his first deployment.
