Renee, I got a special tour of the galley and believe me that is a dangerous place too! I agree with Barbara. On cruise, the only way they call is to use a pay phone and calling card. Contact the Red Cross. Ben worked on the flight deck also and they are all very concerned about safety.

Renee, is he out to sea? the cell phones don't work while out to sea.

Renee, I am praying for you and the situation.

We have sprint and they said I could put my son on the standby plan and he wouldn't have to pay and then reconnect it when he returns. Their international calling plans only cover Australia and Japan. I don't know what countries they have ports, I'll have to look it up, didn't seem like it was worth the extra money.

the cell phones don't work while they are at sea. Too much steel and no signal. As we left Hawaii, I stood on the hanger bay and called several people while the phones still worked. As did the sailors. Also, they are not supposed to have/use them while they are working. The same thing happened as we pulled in at Coronado Island.
Verizon said he could get an international calling plan, but he couldn't use the cell phone in foreign countries-at least not the ones that he visited. Don't know if he was able to get a refund of that or not. But it sure was handy when we were in Hawaii!
We met Ben and 2 of his buddies at Waikki Beach the day we flew in. Never would've found him without the cell phone.

They use calling cards. It's a pay phone, not much privacy, but a supply of those would be good. Just heard yesterday that Walgreens has international calling cards on sale 2 for 1 this week.

Ben took a dvd player and lots of movies. that might be an idea. they live in a really small space. Storage under the rack and then a narrow locker. so think small.

Hi Karoline,
Welcome! this is a great website and you will get lots of information. He doesn't share much probably because things change and the sailors often don't know until the last minute.
My son Ben was told in boot camp that he would be going to Pensacola for "A" school. So we based a whole trip around that. We got a call from him as we were driving to Great Lakes for graduation that he would not be going there, but to Virginia Beach. this was 2 days before graduation. He wondered if we still wanted to come.
I said "are you kidding?" Who cares about the rest of the trip, we're coming to see you!" So hang in there. I've had to learn some patience as do the sailors.
The reason for Ben's change in schools, was due to Hurricane Katrina. It had damaged part of the base in Pensacola.
And when we were taking the tiger cruise last month, I didn't feel confident that we were going on 10-1 until the Lincoln pulled into Pearl Harbor. People would always ask me why I wasn't definite on the date. And I replied "The ship's return is based somewhat on world events. Things can change."
So I guess what I am basically saying, is things can change fast and sailors on are on need to know basis. Be patient.
Is he in boot camp now? if yes, go to PIR if you can, what an awesome experience. Bring a box of tissues.
