DEP-Leavin' for bootcamp in August

This group is for N4M members that have a loved one leaving for bootcamp in August...I will leave the year open so that even future Deppers leaving in the month of August of any year can join...Lets share stories, information, concerns, and questions

Latest Activity: Jul 22, 2022

Hello everyone and welcome to the Navy!!! This Group was started for the loved one of DEPpers leaving in the month of August (although everyone is welcome).......What year you say? Well ......any year!

We are an extension of the group DEPpers/Future Sailors....in, but not gone yet- see the link above.

If you haven't been there, go there now....There is a ton of information that you will need and are probably dying for....like what to send with them to Boot Camp and BC videos! :)

So if you have general information and comments that will be helpful and/or encouraging for ALL new DEP/Future Sailor Moms, then leave it in that main DEPper/Future Sailors Group, but if you have August ship out issues/questions etc., need specific information, (or have some to share) or just want to talk to someone that is where you are, with a Recruit leaving for and arriving in BC in August, ...then this is the place to be. :-)

Remember, don't "miss 'em while you're with them!" :) Make the most of every precious moment together before they leave. This will be a big transition for both of you! We'll be here for you every step of the way...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Things to do in the last month before your future sailor leaves (Click on the link.)

Once your recruit has arrived at RTC, the next stop here is to join the group Boot Camp for Moms (and loved ones)  Hangout and ask questions in this group until your form letter arrives.

***New news just out today (9/25/19) from the US Navy Recruit Training Command FaceBook page:
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

Approx two to three weeks after your recruit arrives you will receive the "Form Letter". The form letter will include their Ship# , DIV #, their mailing address, PIR date, and the Security Access Form. The Security Access form needs to be completed and sent back to your recruit ASAP. Keep this letter in a safe place, it has the information you will need.

The date that is on the form letter is the official date for your Recruit's Training Groups PIR (graduation), Things can always change for an individual Recruit (due to illness, injury, failure to pass a final test etc.)! So, we always recommend that you plan, if possible, to purchase Refundable or Exchangeable plane tickets.

After you have received the form letter, join the group for your recruits PIR. There you can ask questions about PIR, training, hotels etc. Those groups will be posted in the Boot Camp for Mom's group.

Thanks for joining us. We hope you will realize you are not alone, and will soon make new friends, plus feel supported and encouraged! :)

**It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Sets New Physical Fitness Standard to Start Boot Camp. "The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes seven seconds for female recruits."

Jennifer I am not actually crazy about him being in the SEALS and he is just excited to be leaving and getting MA. But he may change his mind and try at a later time.

Jennifer- do you know once they get to Chicago, do they take the bus to Great Lakes? My son was interested in being a Corpsman but he is most interested in the job he got, Master at Arms. He was working on a degree in Criminal Justice before he decided to enlist.

Awesome Mom, I know I told my son the only way I would be okay with this is if he went into the Navy and he was going to try and get into the SEALS but had a hard time with the swimming so he got his second choice- Master at Arms. He is so excited like I said and I am trying to be, this is what he really wants.

Welcome SoulStar to the site, It has been a few days since I was on. As you can see from the post before, my son leaves for BC on Aug. 10. He has been a DEP since Aug. of last year. Now we are in the countdown stage.

Kate, I know the feelings you are haveing !
It is so hard for Moms like us to let go and try to be excited and happy for our kids. The one comfort I have found, as that the Navy seems to be a safer branch to serve in. However, his being a SEAL recruit scares me to death ! What job has you're son chosen ?

My son got word today he is leaving August 17 from Florida. He is so excited, me-I'm trying to be just as excited but failing miserably!

My son supposed to ship out on June 3, which was a total disaster. Seems his recruiter "dropped the ball" with his paperwork for security clearance. We were told at his swearing in, that the paperwork may not be back in time for him to leave, but, "don't worry, everything should be "good to go" on June 7th. Well, he went thru the whole thing again, going to the hotel, good bye's again, Monday came, and we got yet another call fromAustin saying," the paperwork is still not done !"
I have to add, that both times, his recruiter assured us that everything was " Good to go".
So, Austin is now jobless, Medical insurance cancelled and waiting.
He does have an awesome attitude though. As he is a SEAL recruit, he is taking this time to continue his "training" with the special ops instructors here in tampa.
I'm so glad there seems to be some activity here in the August group...
My best to you all :O) ~Sue~

Hi Jennifer and thanks for the welcome! You're right. They might end up together since the dates are so close. What is your son's current rating? Does it look like he has a chance of being able to switch his job? My husband has been trying to enlist in the Navy since last August. Along the way, everyone kept warning him that the Hospital Corpsman job was very unlikely since it's overmanned and there are rarely any openings for it. We kept hoping for the best and on his 3rd trip to MEPS he finally was able to choose a job and it was available.

It was the only Corpsman job available that day and the job classifier told him that it belong to someone else in another state, but the person had a drug issue that disqualified him and led to the Corpsman spot opening back up. We were so happy because he really wasn't interested in any of the other jobs. Good luck to your son!!

Hello everyone! My husband has been in DEP since last month and he is leaving for boot camp on August 16. His rating is Hospital Corpsman, which is exactly what he was hoping to get. We're both really excited and becoming more anxious as the days go by. 2 more months...!
