OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Hello everyone and welcome to the Navy!!! This Group was started for the loved one of DEPPERS leaving in the month of October (although everyone is welcome).......What year you say? Well ......any year!

If you have October ship out issues/questions etc., need specific information, (or have some to share) or just want to talk to someone that is where you are, with a Recruit leaving for and arriving in BC in October, ...then this is the place to be. :-)

Remember, don't "miss 'em while you're with them!" :) Make the most of every precious moment together before they leave. This will be a big transition for both of you! We'll be here for you every step of the way...

Once your recruit has arrived at RTC, the next stop here is to join the group Boot Camp for Moms (and loved ones) Hangout and ask questions in this group until your form letter arrives.

***New news just out today (9/25/19) from the US Navy Recruit Training Command FaceBook page:

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

Approx two to three weeks after your recruit arrives you will receive the "Form Letter". The form letter will include their Ship# , DIV #, their mailing address, PIR date, and the Security Access Form. The Security Access form needs to be completed and sent back to your recruit ASAP. Keep this letter in a safe place, it has the information you will need.

The date that is on the form letter is the official date for your Recruit's Training Groups PIR (graduation), Things can always change for an individual Recruit (due to illness, injury, failure to pass a final test etc.)! So, we always recommend that you plan, if possible, to purchase Refundable or Exchangeable plane tickets.

After you have received the form letter, join the group for your recruits PIR. There you can ask questions about PIR, training, hotels etc.Those groups will be posted in the Boot Camp for Mom's group.

**It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Fitness Standards"The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes 37 seconds for female recruits."

Comment by sailormom on October 7, 2012 at 8:53pm: son left last Monday. We got the 15 second call, however we haven't received the box yet. Had to clean out his room so his sister could move in, That was really hard. That's been his room for 15 years. Looking forward to getting the letter.

I believe it is the USS Pearl Harbor Ship 1 on Camp Moffet the InProcessing Barracks.. (The about.com article states Ship 11 which is the Kearsarge and is indeed all the way across RTC from the processing side. It is a Division barracks now). Camp Moffet is across the street from the other two Camps. It is all RTC.

There are three Camps to RTC.

~ Camp Moffett is the main in-processing area. This is where the recruits will arrive.

~ Camp Porter is the main recruit training area where most of the training is taken place.

~ Capt John Paul Jones is mainly for housing of the recruits. (Courtesy NavyDEP.com)

Naval Station Great Lakes is huge and spread out. The two Bases are RTC - Recruit Training Command and the Main base which has TSC - Training Support Center, where some of your newly graduated Sailors will go to "A" school. TSC is about a mile up the road from RTC.

Comment by FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW on October 6, 2012 at 3:08pm: The area code for RTC GL is "847". You may also see "PAY PHONE" or "US GOVERNMENT". Occasionally we have seen an area code for the surrounding areas. We suggest answer all and get rid of the telemarketers. (On my Android I can enter those numbers as a "blocked" number. So if they call back it doesn't go through.)

In addition, if you miss a call from your recruit. Never call the number back unless they say too(which I have never seen happen personally. Have seen them ask to have something faxed.). That could be "bad". If it is business they will call back. If it was a personal call, no guarantee that they will. Most calls are scheduled by the RDC' for the divisions. Some recruits may earn calls for doing something exceptionally well. In the same respect, calls can be taken away.

Comment by FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW on October 6, 2012 at 2:57pm: Jack - Same thing happened to me. BUT my son was allowed a call the following Sunday. Didn't expect it and missed it. He said he would call back. He did on Tuesday. That time I spoke with him. Of course I was kind of freaked out! But it was just an I'm here call. :) THEN he called again on Thursday for business...security clearance info call. Short and to the point. So three calls In the first ten days. I was a mess. You see, I kept trying to go into "no news is good news" mode...and I couldn't do that when I kept getting calls! LOL. Now, this situation above does not always happen. It is strictly up to the RDC's. You may not ever get that I'm here call. But yeah, unless he had them turn around he's there!

As well as joining , Boot Camp Mom's and PIR Reference Information, you may want to join one or more of these groups sometime between now and the end of BC: Corry Station IT Moms (not very active), IT A Schoolers, INFORMATION SYSTEMS TECHNICIAN - IT, ITOF, IT-ATF, ITS, and/or Sailors In Pensacola, FL For A School....Corry Station too!!.
