HI Ladies,
To answer some of the question: I am in IL. No - all work days are NOT 14 to 16 hours long. My son's ship is having several inspections -( I think the 4th one this summer is coming up) AND they have to have ALL areas of that ship to work CORRECTLY to pass. Only one suggestioned if your sailors get a ship stationed in Japan - pack LONG JOHNS !!!!! The reason - some area of Japan get very windy cold and the NEX runs out of long johns fast. ANd the stores off base - do NOT carry sizes of our sailors. My sailor said:" WE are giants to them." I know I sound crazy, but when you get a call and your sailor says he/she is freezing - please send all my long johns overnight - you do! And long johns make great packing stuff for breakable items. That another thing - if mailing something you thing might break - use those Freezer Zip-Lock bags. Then if anything happens - it is contained in the bag and does not damage anthing else. And your sailor can reuse those bags. I wish we all could meet. My sailor shared that in the entire Navy there are only 800 MN. My sailor stated that one has to volunteer to be MN. So our guys/gal are very special persons. ANd so are we - we stand by their choice. Do any of you feel - that you joined the Navy too? Need to rush off - Have light crank duty. Oh - crank duty a term for doing the dishes, cleaning up the ship. Each sailor has 90 days of crank duty on their ship. Funny - I have been on crank duty for over 50 years! Where's the break? Have a great day TLynn

Hi Jeni :)
My sailor has many funny / strange stories. Even from boot camp and being station for those first classes at GL. Like the great cookie chase. He got to come home for a weekend - I baked cookies which he brought back. His roomate helped him back to his room and started unpacking his bag - found the cookies and took off running and yelling - " I got the cookies !" My son - chased him up 5 flights of stairs! So I have a journal and I write down all these stories. When he gets out of the Navy - it will be there for him to read to his family. But really that juornal is my way to help stop what I call "Sailor Withdrawl" I had that bad today - so I had to bake chocolate chip cookies. Hubby is happy. Is you sialor still at GL or getting ready to go to his ship?
Have a good evenng. TLynn

Good Morning :)
I have to share this IMPORTANT information and please share this with your other sites. A Navy Mom on the Japan Moms site, was sharing about a bad situation her sailor is in right now. Her sailor had purchased one of those ipod cell phone so he could listen to music on his tours. He NEVER made one phone call - just lsiten to music. BUT he did NOT TURN OFF the international roaming! When he got back to base - he received a phone bill for $2600.00! The sailor did try to get help from Legal, but they can't help him. All he could do was get a loan with 16% interest. So if your sailors have that ipod cell phone - share this with them. To TURN OFF that international roaming when not making a phone call. I had a good last night. My sailor called home.:). He finally recieved his computer back and could use skype again and talk and talk and talk .... Which he did!! He had to share something that happened on his ship. That poor ship is having its 4th inpsection and the all sailors of that ship are working 14 to 16 hour days. Well one day was totally frustrating to all. My sailor had a mini tantrum. He was so frustrated how his project was not turning out ok - that he just had to throw something. He knew he could not throw the expensive tool in his hand - so he reached into his pocket - grabbed the first thing and threw it overboard. It was his cell phone. AS he saw it hit the water - he realized what he threw. I was in stitches with laughing. I finally got control of myself and told him I was so sorry his day had been that bad. And then asked if King Neptune had called him yet. He responded with "haha Mom". I also asked if he finds any Japanese newspaper articles about a fisherman finding a cell phone while gutting his fish - to send it my way. So he had to go buy a new cell phone - you guessed it! He purchased that ipod thing. Yes, I emailed him first about the international roaming. Hope you all have a good morniing and day. I have to go and check on the 21 Monarch caterpillars. talk later TLynn

Glida,
Happy to hear that your Mom is stable. Yes, understand fully what situations you are and will deal with. Please, remember to take tiime for yourself. I know I sound selffish, but you really need to have special time for yourself. So glad to know that the crew is being there for Ricky. I wish you could be there too. Knowing my Akex - he will tell Ricky that he is just playing sick to get out of all the extra hours for the up coming inspection. Alex won't mean that - just be teasing him. Please keep us posted how your Mom and Ricky are doing. And remember you are important too. TLynn

Good Morning Maureen.
Wish I had some information for you. You stated that your son will be on a ship in SD. Does he has it's name? All the ships should have websites. Maybe you could find some information there. Have a good day. TLynn

Glida,
You are having a real roller coaster ride! Your mom and Ricky too. I wish I had knwn that Ricky had been in the hosptial. Alex is without his computer, so our talking over skype is gone and he has to arrange time at the USO to get on a computer. Hopefully, Alex should receive that computer soon and what ever I learn I will pass on to you. Right now, I am concerned about you. You are doing so much and just want to make sure that you take time for yourself - you count too! Keep in touch and you are in my thoughts TLynn

That is why my son was concerned for her/ other female MNs to have privacy. But at least - she will KNOW her shipmates and know they cover each others backs.

Hi JeriLynne,
Yes, you are correct. There are not many of MN. But they sure have a very important job. My son was stating that his ship will actaully go into mine fields to clear it, so the bigger ships can pass through. He also shared, that being a small ship and only like 80 on a ship - they really get to know their shipmates. That he knows his back is covered in a time of need. That they know everyones face and look out for each other. Even the officers are more aware of the their crew and KNOW them. So keep us posted when your son gets his orders and his ship. My sailor is stationed in Japan. Miss him. Have a good evening Tlynn PS Thanks f to Glida for creating this site. This is the only MN site I know of. So yes - we are small, but I bet we will grow.

Hi and welcome,
My son is stationed in Sasebo now. Been a MN for nearly a year. He stated the same comment - not many MN in the Navy. For one thing that I have learned - those ships are small. But he shares, that he knows everyone sailors' face on that ship and that all of them know - they have someone covering their back. Hope Trina comes on soon - she is the mother of the first female MN that I have met! She has much to share with all of us, because her daaughter has been in the Navy now for over 4 years. Thanks Trina for listening and thanks Glida for creating this site. TLynn
