~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

Good morning!

Oh, on Southwest Airlines....no change fee is charged if you have to change reservations (i.e., your SR is asmoed (delayed in training) for any reason--I experienced this with my son and had not booked with Southwest so had to pay the change fees  :-( ).  Also, 2 bags check for free.

Remember....flying into Milwaukee (45 min drive to GL, straight interstate, no traffic) is usually a little cheaper (or can be) than flying into Chicago.  Car rental is cheaper too.  Be sure to check out Southwest Airlines into Milwaukee or Midway (Midway is about an hour or more drive to GL....lots of traffic too since it is in Chicago...but sailors flying out will be flying out of the Chicago airports, most likely, so if you plan to meet them at the airports for a visit, keep that in mind).

Good Morning All !

StrongSolidSecureNM,

Well, now that you know the PIR date, you can first off, book your hotel for the days you plan on being there.  You need to know whether your SR has A school at Great Lakes (so you can stay untilMonday) or is flying out for A school (so you stay either till Saturday evening or Sunday).  The hotels that most families here recommend are the Navy Lodge, Residence Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Springhill Suites, and Courtyard Marriot.  The last four are all in Waukegan, 10 min away from RTC.  You just call them directly to book and ask for which is their better rate for Navy Graduation.  You don't need any deposit to make a reservation.

Then check for the airfares and book directly with the airlines if you can.  The 3rd party places sometimes aren't very flexible if you have to make any change.  Southwest Airlines has sales and you can bring 2 bags to check-in for free.  They only fly into Midway (1 hour from RTC) or Milwaukee (40 mins from RTC).  Delta is another good airline that flies into both Chicago O'Hare and Midway.  Purchase your tickets on a Tuesday or Wednesday for the lowest fare.

Booking a rental car will always be cheaper than relying on shuttle to take you around.  You can rent a car for less than $35/day and can go to a restaurant and shopping, etc.  The shuttles charge about $50 one way from Chicago O'Hare.  The roads are kept clear of snow by Illinois transit.  If you will be meeting your Sailor at one of the airports to give him/her their cell phone, charger, laptop, adapter, comfy underwear, you will need the rental car for that too.  We rented a car, but used Sarge's shuttle to get to PIR and back to our hotel.  You don't need a deposit to rent a car and most will take a debit card to reserve and pay for the rental too.

If your SR is flying out to A school, you will have from 10:30 am to about 7:00 pm with them on that PIR Friday, then you can meet them at the airport to give them their electronics about 3:00 am and go through the airport with them until their flight leaves.  If your SR has A school at Great Lakes, you have a few minutes after PIR with them, then they have to go back to their barracks to move all their stuff over to the A school side and you have to pick them up about 3:00 pm or 4:00 pm, be with him/her until about 9:00 pm, then can have them for Saturday and Sunday, returning them back each evening to RTC.  You can give them their stuff to take with them after they have moved to the A school side.

Don't plan every moment beforehand.  Let your SR dictate the day.  Some just want to relax, have a great meal, and a nice, private shower.  Hope this is enough to get you started!!  :D

Oh, pay attention to the weather temperatures up on the weather widget!!  See how it is in the 20's in the daytime?  Make sure you have a heavy coat, scarf, gloves for the time you are up in Great Lakes!!  You will need to wear sweaters, long sleeved tops, long pants, closed toed shoes, heavier socks.  I'm from Southern California and found I didn't need to buy boots or a hat.  There is a Super Walmart in Waukegan where all the hotels are if you need to supplement your wardrobe.

Can someone tell me how to plan for PIR? What does this day look like after the ceremony? How much time would we typically have with our sailor? Did anyone from ship 14 div 62 get a call?
Comment by diannep on December 4, 2013 at 12:39am

The form letters can actually take up to 2 or even 3 weeks to receive sometimes.

Comment by diannep on December 4, 2013 at 12:37am

Phone calls are very very random...during the entire bootcamp process...other than the I'm a Sailor call which comes during the week before PIR....that is a great call!  Keep the phones close so you don't miss calls during bootcamp, even when in the bathroom or getting the mail!  It only takes seconds to miss their call!

Mail is given to them after the Recruit Mail Petty Officer is trained for their division.  This usually is completed within 2 weeks after they arrive at bootcamp.  It is possible that they sent letters out yesterday and received mail Sunday....if not, it should be this weekend.  Their mail out day will always be on Monday.  But they will receive mail M-F after the initial Sunday mail delivery the first time.

Sailormom, my husband left the 19th as well and I got the box and letter the following Monday and like you haven't gotten any phone calls. He's ship 14 div 062.

Ironically enough (considering some have received the call but no box or letter)...I have received the form letter and thebox, but no call. My son left on 11/19 which was on a Tuesday and by that Monday (6 days later) I received the box and the form letter on the same day. Well, actually FedEx tried to deliver the box on that Monday but no one was home, but I did get the form letter in the mail that very day, BUT.... I havent recieved a phone call. I dont quite understand how this all works, but I have concluded there seems to be no rhyme or reason to any of it. I am hoping, since today is the completion of week two that just maybe I might receive a call sometime soon. I have mailed him a letter almost every single day or at least an envelope with a short note and a few pictures or something that wont get him in trouble. I dont think they have been given their mail at this point. Does anyone know when they will start recieving it?
