navywife: You can send out names by "Send Message to Group" prompt up top. OR....you can post on here: " Does anyone have an SR with initials ___ from (city) in Div ___?" Then ask that they private message you if they do. That way, you can talk privately on here.
...sending the Christmas cards from your step grandson's class is awesome!
ProudofGar: Your letter to the SR doesn't have to be long. You can just ask where he/she is from, how they decided to enlist, where they will go to A School for what job, etc..questions that hopefully will make them want to write you back. Share some things like Autumn suggested too Then the rest of the letter could just be to encourage him/her through, stating how proud you are of their enlistment in wanting to serve their country, and how they will get through bootcamp and become a fine sailor! Encourage them to please write you back (you may even want to enclose a stamped self-addressed envelope/paper--although they have access to Navy stationery). You just want to put a smile on that SR's face during mail call when his/her name is called out!
Hello... I got a letter and a phone call yesterday. The letter was actually to ME this time :-) The phone call, she said, was supposed to be her first "for real" call - as opposed to the 5 previous that she was bootlegging I guess :-) Conclusion: Even the Navy cannot shut down a creative mind!
So, my SR said she was on light duty the beginning of this week because she popped shin splints. Family friend who went through RTC 2 years ago said to tell our SR's to make sure they drink a big glass of milk with every meal for the calcium...and that's even if they put them on calcium supplements. Beginning week 3 she said physical activity will ramp up considerably. My SR said her's weren't real bad - thus light duty - and that she got to go to physical therapy "with 2 really cute guys" *sigh* some things never change.
Another tid bit... if your SR's are feeling puny or a cold coming on... tell them to drink warm water with lots of honey. While they can't get the over the counter cold meds we're so used to reaching for, honey is loaded with tons of natural healing powers. Think "Burts Bees" Anyway...it works and could be just the boost to keep them from SIQ time or worse.
I've also been following the mail for non-mail recipients... Rather than sending a letter a day, I had been journaling a letter and sending 8 pages or more at one time. During her call, she told me that when they don't get mail during mail call every day, it makes her feel like curling up in a ball and crying. I realized that these are kids that have grown up in the era of instant communication gratification. They use texts and less frequently email like we used phone calls and faxes...remember when voice mail and fax machines where miracles? They have no idea what it is to have to wait for snail mail and so are not conditioned to it at all. My heart broke. I have changed my methods. Figure it won't hurt her to miss one day from me now and then if I can't get to the post office (can't trust the rural mail boxes for the rampant theft out here in the sticks) but there will be something put in an envelope for her every day now.
Anita- my heart goes out to you. Hope it all works out!
Judy
Good Afternoon!
Hi ProudofGar, I know my sons division started with 88, just to give you an idea of how many SR might be in your sons division. As for what to write about to someone you don't know...one mom was telling me that they just tell about their life. (Interesting or funny stories etc) You don't neccessarily have to talk about the current but go back as many years as you like sharing fun memories. I am sure whatever you say will be appreciated.
Also is there like some sort of generic letter I have such a hard time getting started writing to someone I know nothing about I spent several hours the other night searching for something to atleast help me get started this one that I am mailing today was easy enough cause my son had talked a little about him in his letters!
diannp beleive me I have been working on that. I did find out lastnight that the young man that my son has become really close with hasn't been receiving any I already have a card filled with encouraging words to send out today!!! He said there were others but he had already given me this guys info! If anyone else wants it just let me know! I also had my step grandsons class make some Christmas cards and when I spoke with my son lastnight I told him they would be coming to him and he needed to pass them out to the guys with nothing! So far I only have 17 and have no clue how many is in his div.
