~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.
~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.
~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.
~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:
• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:
• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.
Some Suggestions:
~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.
~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option
~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Lisa, THANK YOU!! I wasn't sure about that wanna get away one. Makes so much sense because we were thinking the same thing....knowing Chicago weather is unpredictable we thought if we don't make PIR we will go to South Carolina this summer.....but I really hope we all can make it into Chicago! :)
lisah: They are so rushed when doing the boxes and form letters, that more often than not, there is no personal note. Some are so afraid to do the wrong thing that they may want to write a note, but are scared they may get in trouble (like tara said)! Just know that the first letter you get, or phone call, will have you doing the HAPPY DANCE and not even caring what others around you think! :-) Just please....don't knock the mail carrier over! :-)
tara: Your daughter is going to make a wonderful sailor with her compliance to rules!
Just another heads up...many of the hotels in the area will offer you a Navy Grad rate if you ask. Some of the hotels that we have received rave reviews on, all with Navy Grad rates, are:
Springhill Suites, Courtyard Inn, Residence Inn (where we stayed), Navy Lodge. Navy Lodge is the closest, but they have no PIR shuttle service so you need to drive (1.5 miles) or call a regular cab---you book in your SRs name...you get a free pass to a smaller NEX nearby that you can shop in without your sailor if you want. Sarge's MeetandGreet (held the night before PIR...free to all!) is located close to the Springhill, Courtyard and Residence. There is a big WalMart there too with some restaurants nearby.
Some ladies have posted that they got better hotel rates online than by calling and asking for the Navy Grad rate, so check out all of your options. In our case, we have AAA and used that discount at Residence--which I booked online.
Refundable tickets, recommended by RTC, are very expensive. Southwest won't refund either, but changes (no fee) and if you cancel totally, you have a year to use the ticket. I had a delayed flight back in April .... about 3 hours....and they issued vouchers to each of us good for a flight in the future up to a year. Haven't used it yet...better be thinking where I may want to go!
Just know that as of January, Southwest will charge for "no shows." So you must cancel if you won't make it.
lisah - Don't let it bother you, you aren't alone. I received my daughter's form letter a few days ago - same thing. I know my daughter - if she thought it was okay to write a note on that form letter she would have. She is all about following the rules TO THE LETTER (at least this early on)..... so, I'm sure your son was doing the same (No offense to those who did - - I'm just saying if they didn't come right out and say they could.. I assume she felt they couldn't) I could tell she was doing her best to print every letter to perfection (because she feels that's what they want, pefection!) Besides, I'm sure she was really worried that they might review her letter before they sent it .. who knows! Anyway - I don't feel bad about it. However, my daughter is going through TS screenings so I've had calls for additional certificates and contact information. I'm so proud!
Got my letter last Friday, I rushed to open saw his neat block printing and scanned every page for a personal note, nothing. Trying to not let it bother me but after two days I think I'm gonna start crying over it. I know its not about me he has a lot on his plate and i don't want him to think he has to worry about my feelings. So I guess that's why we have this site, thanks for listening to me whine.
sunflower...the Southwest website has a selection of fares, one is called "wanna get away" these are not refundable but are changeable. I booked a flight, SFO to Milwaukee for $159 one way. We booked 3 round trips for $688. I know refundable is strongly recommended but if for some reason we can't make PIR I will want to see him in San Antonio, and if I can't get too see him within the next few months I will definitely need a vacation, haha.
Good Morning Ladies!
Im so excited to attend PIR Feb 8th!!!
