For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Comment by Craig on January 4, 2013 at 11:01am: I'll add one more - These sailors get sucked into buying laptop computers from the Navy Exchange (NEX) because they are "tax free". Here's the problem, if you go to Best Buy, not only are you buying the most up-to-date model laptop, it will also be cheaper. Lets say you get last years HP for $800, at Best Buy you can buy this years for $600. And even if you pay the tax you're only up to $660. Also, the NEX only has the most expensive laptops. They don't carry the cheapies Acer, Toshiba, or others that are $280. Be wise and buy the very cheapest laptop at Best Buy. An average laptop only last 20 months anyways.

Bottomline, don't get suckered into the "tax free" mindset. go to the place that rotates their stock....

One thing my son who is home on leave from Guam reminded me of was at PIR afterwards, there are what they call "sharks" people who set up booths trying to sell their items, everything Navy of course :) they will have opportunity to buy a Navy ring, somewhat like a high school class ring. Jaysen did buy one, and four years later it and the companion ring (for mom, wife or gf) still sits in the boxes. It's a really nice ring, maybe he will wear it when's he is older. I think he spent $400.00 on it, they will finance and take so much out every payday. He wrote to his brother Jamie and told him not to get sucked into buying everything he sees.

Comment by Craig on January 4, 2013 at 4:54am: If you have sailors in those rating (jobs), give them just enough info to answer the single question, no more. The reason? My son called us about every week. While we were "searching" for the info he needed, we talked on the phone for a really long time. For some reason -hint-hint-wink-wink- we could never find the stuff quickly. We never provided any extras because we knew he'd have to call again. We got calls all the time.

One thing that was really funny (to me) was the investigator needed my son's birth certificate. I actually talked to him (the investigator) who was a former CT. We compared duty stations just to see if we were at the same place at the same time... He was a really friendly guy. So when I scanned the birth certificate in, I wrote on the bottom: "Please make my son do 30 push-ups and tell him later that was from his dad because he forgot to clean your bedroom before you left". He did it...

Later on, while in "A" school, I had the Command Master Chief pull him out of school and had him report to the his office, who was a friend of mine. Man did he freak. The long arm of the law is never far away. I still mess with him. It's part of having a sailor for a father.... Woo-hoo.....
