Ann, I will be praying for the families of these young people.  I hope for a quick recovery for the man in ICU.  This is the reason I think I actually worry less with him at boot camp than away at college. His safety is being looked after and  I know he can not be getting into trouble. If anything bad happens I would be immediately notified.

Ann-So sorry to hear about the tragic loss...I pray the recovery of the young man in ICU and for the little girl fighting cancer...for the families too.

I'm sorry to do this on Christmas Day...but I haven't posted it yet at all! I will be posting it periodically for the first half of Boot Camp...to try and let all the new members know as they join. There is a link for this up under the eagle (leads to the discussion forum post) and it is also in the Discussion Forum area. Thank You!

Community Guidelines and OPSEC

Hello Everyone.

Safety for your SR (future Sailor) and you!

Sailors LAST names are NOT allowed anywhere on this site. If your last name is different from your sailors it is still not recommended.

FIRST names ARE allowed but I, and some of the other “veteran” moms, will most often advise you not to use them. This is a public forum and anyone can read the posts-they do not have to be a member (if the group is set to private, the public cannot read but all N4M members can-so all you have to do is join) While they use their last names in BC (in fact they don't usually, if ever, find out each other’s first names until the end of BC), the RDC's know who they are and can then, with the right amount of info, link them up to you. So, let’s say you use your last name in your N4M name, post a picture of your SR...easy to match up...and so on.

Why does that matter? Your SR's are trying to get through BC with as little undue attention as possible. "Fly under the radar", so to speak. There have been reports from moms of their recruits being matched up with them. Some are just identified…some get IT (Intensive Training), I am guessing this depends on WHAT is posted…I know of one mom who said that her son had to do 5 push-ups just for every time she posted!

The MOST important reason for being discreet is OPSEC-Operational Security. This is a way of life for us now. It will be for your Sailors career and for some of them, even more so, depending on their individual security clearance. Some moms have mentioned that even today after years they do not know EXACTLY what their sailor does.

SPECOPS...definitely need to be VERY careful.

Thank You.

AJSIowaMom:  YAH for the phone call!  Congrats!  Not all get to call home home on Christmas, so I know you are thrilled!

Wow, Ann.  Puts it all in perspective, doesn't it?

Hope all have had a wonderful Christmas Day!

Comment by Arwen on December 25, 2011 at 5:45pm

For those of you who don't already know me, I'm Arwen. My son Chris PIR'd Feb. 19, 2009, and I've been hanging out helping out other parents ever since. I'm also a Navy veteran (1980s era) with an extensive list of other Navy veterans in my family, including my husband (a nuke submariner) and my BIL and a cousin who both retired from the Navy within the last decade.

If you have any questions about how this whole thing works, from boot camp to paychecks to PIR, and what happens once they go to school or the fleet, let me know. If I don't know the answer, I know where to find it,or who to ask.

Missing my boy as usual today...but our little town suffered a few tragedies yesterday, and I am thankful to know that my son is SAFE, and I will soon see him again!!!  2 families from this town lost their son's in an accident yesterday morning, and another is fighting for his life in ICU!  Another of my friends young daughter's was in surgery last night to remove a cancerous tumor on her spine!! (she is only 6)...so....although I miss my son like crazy on this day...I realize that what I am dealing with is NOTHING compared to what some other families are facing right now...God Bless those families and yours on the day!

Merry Christmas, all!  I agree totally with Lala.  This time 2 yrs ago, my son was in bootcamp too.  It was a very lonely Christmas with just my older son and me around the tree.  That was the first year I didn't record our Christmas.  Just too painful.  But we have been blessed to have our sailor with us for the past 2 Christmases...so be encouraged for your future!  And...as Lala said...those hugs at PIR are the best!

By the way, at church service last night, a former teacher of my sailor was there with her family.  She was a "mentor" for my son in his "wayward" days of high school....one of a team of teachers who were wonderful support to my son after his dad died suddenly.  She hadn't seen him since he was in high school, which was about 8 yrs ago.  But she and I are friends...and stay in touch somewhat...so she knew about him being in the Navy and actually wrote to him in bootcamp.  Well....she hugged him and wouldn't let go.  I could see my sailor start to let go, and she would hug tighter...this went on for about 20 seconds!  I finally saw her face and she was crying...she apologized to him for squeezing for so long, but said she is just so proud of her son and mine choosing to serve their country.

...you see, her only son just left for Afghanistan 2 months ago (Army officer---25 yrs old).  Her mother has Alzheimers and is in a home; her dad was her mom's sole caretaker but died in a lawnmower accident about 2.5 yrs ago, and then her son finished college and joined the Army. I told my son later that the long hug was her way of hugging her son too.  It was very touching with me in tears too.  I know this is such an emotional time of year for so many....prayers for all today!

Merry Christmas!
