Congrats 917!! Waiting on 084!!
That's only a "maybe" - There were several groups on different flights (at different times) to Pensacola, and some flew from O'hare versus Midway.
Thank you for your answers. I am guessing that what civilian clothes I don't bring he can just go buy some on base as he needs them. So one last question. Will I be able to go by flight info from another Pensacola Sailor for flight info if needed?
crlmltn . . . yep, this is a busy week!
When SAILORs arrive at the airport, they will have: seabag, garment bag and backpack. Most sailors "checked" the seabag and garment bags, and carried-on the back pack. Not all . . .
Most carriers are not persnickity about how much military can check and do not charge them baggage fees. Also, passengers are allowed two carry ons . . . one can be the size of a "roll-aboard" suitcase, the other must be a "personal item" (purse, back pack, computer bag). Your Sailor can take TWO carry-ons.
HERE's what we did. We packed some civilian clothes and personal items in a roll-aboard size suitcase and put all the electronics in a modest sized computer bag (laptop, phone, iPod, flash drives . . . you name it). The suitcase could actually be "unzipped" to expand to pack more stuff, but then must be checked. WHAT you bring for your sailor is up to you . . .
We arrived at Midway airport right after the Navy bus dropped off the group being transported. My son transferred his orders and travel documents from his backpack to the computer bag. We expanded the suitcase, and packed the back pack in it! [NOTE: they have been given a water bottle in their back pack, if you CHECK the back pack, EMPTY the water bottle first!!] SO, when he checked in to get his boarding pass, he checked the seabag, the garment bag AND the suitcase (with the backpack inside). He carried on his computer bag.
DON'T WORRY if you have to make last minute plans. My son did not get his orders before battlestations, so I had to plan "on the fly" once we got to PIR. We brought all the stuff, and were prepared to bring it home and ship it had we not made the connection.
Finally - if by Florida you mean P-cola, I've been following the weather for a month now. They will wear uniforms for the next few weeks (and they HAVE a coat). Perhaps a hoodie, or something transitional would work.
My son is in Div. 87 so another week for us to wait but I am loving hearing your posts about phone calls coming soon after BS:) Good luck to all the SRs becoming Sailors today - WOOHOO!! I am so excited for all of you!
I am not moving from my desk at work, and I have my cell phone right next to it. :) Hope the calls start coming for everyone!!
Blue candle burning as I type. Prayers for all of 03/09 PIR BS, but now 085 and 086. I am so excited right now I know I am going to forget something. I am trying to get everything packed and ready for the dog sitter (I have a diabetic dog who needs 2 shots a day) so that tomorrow when I get the call I will not be shopping or anything. I do have a couple of questions though if someone would please help me. I am trying to get my sons bag packed with things he will want and he never answered my question of what to bring him. He told me a couple of weeks ago on a call that he has a seabag that weighs 200 pounds (haha) and a backpak that he has to bring to A school and not a lot will fit if I bring too much. I know he will want his phone, camera, computer, and skype camera for sure. Can he carry a computer bag with his back pack, or is he only allowed one carry bag? Also, do you think I should bring him some civilian clothes and his heavy jacket, he is going to Florida? Last question, I have written an told him I need his flight info so I can meet him. He said that he has busy and has only been able to read half my letters ( wrote him everyday). If he has not read the letters asking the info I need for flight, will I be able to go off another SRs flight info to Florida for a time and airport to meet him?
My cell phone is in hand here at work, waiting for that call!!
