I forgot part of the reason mail is held is because a MRPO has to be appointed, trained and pass a test to be able to handle the mail.
MRPO stands for Mail Recruit Petty Officer.
Calls - Recruits may can earn calls...but don't expect them for the first three weeks at the least and four at the most. I got one at the end of week two, so almost three weeks into BC, because my sons division did so well on their first Academic test (which comes in the late part of week 2). This was also used as there "I'm still alive" call.
Security Clearance calls - If your SR has a rating (job specialty) that requires a security clearance you will probably receive a call within the first 7-10 days for more contacts for their backround check. This a brief business call. Usually no social time. They will be monitored and scripted on what to say and told when to get off. I still said "I Love you" anyways!
Ocassionally, very rare, whoever is monitoing the call may give the recruit a little time.
When mine came the caller ID was "US GOVERNMENT".
The area code for RTC is 847. We have also had reports of "PAY PHONE".
So watch for all three.
Get one of these too:
...I crack myself up...I know...I'm the only one (sigh) I just can't be serious...UNLESS you break OPSEC...then I am like stink on a skunk!
Woo-Hoo! Have a great day folks! Hope your form letters come in and ASK QUESTIONS!
I got my box on Wednesday, the letter yesterday and a phone call today...this has been an awesome week for me!!!! I was nervous when I heard his voice because I thought it was too early for a call but it was just because he needed some information for his security clearance.
Demetris--ditto what the others have said. Thanks so much for joining us and helping us poor frazzled moms. Especially, Thank You for Your Service.
There is a link to the RTC website that has addresses for the Ships.
http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/contact_recruit.asp
BUT make sure you get your SR's ship confirmed...or the mail WILL be delayed or sent back.
Again, your from letter is your best source.
This is how it will look in your form letter, the Recruit Training Command is not necessary and if you get a Ship name niether is that:
SR, Last Name, First Name, Middle initial
Ship ##, Divison ###
Recruit Training Command
#### Something Drive or Avenue
Great Lakes ILL 60088-####
SR= Seaman Recruit
From what we know...the Divisions write there form letter on their first day of training. Week1 Day 1. This is the first TD after "P" Processing days are over. The days in BC are counted 1-5 and Saturday and Sunday are not included in the "Counting" of days. So lets say your Division starts Week1 Day1 on a Thursday, Friday is W1 D2, skip Sa and Su and Monday would be W1 D3. The next Thursday would be Week 2 Day 1.
The only time this gets adjusted is when there is a Federal Holiday. Those can end up (usually are) being treated like a Sunday.
When you write to your recruit...ask them to write the real date and the training date on their letter...then you know what day they are on!
I got my form letter!!! I wasn't actually at home when the letter arrived but my daughter called to tell me the news. So excited, thought I was prepared -- but she got as far as "Dear Mom", and right then and there in the middle of Big Lots, I just lost it. This is by far the most emotional experience of my life. My heart hurts and at the same time I am filled with so much pride. "P" days are over, what a relief!! This is the best day I've had since he left 11 days ago, tears and all. I hope the mailman is good to everyone today:)
Demetris - Thank you for your help!
