Love the Group hug FTLW!

DODiva  I was going to stay at Ramada too but then I heard from other moms it's old and smells like smoke.  So I'm with you, I'm going to attend Sarge's meet and greet and stay nearby.  I've heard its best to catch a shuttle to the base anyway

I'm with you about not sharing my son with dad/stepmom/aunts/grandmas but i'm not sure how to handle it.  My son put only me, my hubbie and GF on the list, not his dad and i'm not sure what to say to his dad.....he doesn't know yet that he's not invited.  Regardless, if he's going to get only a few hours after boot camp I know he's not going to want to spend it with his dad and stepmom (he has a strained relationship with him)  His dad is a good person though and he will be extrememly hurt if he cannot attend.....

GEEDUNK

To most sailors the word geedunk means ice cream, candy, potato chips and other assorted snacks, or even the place where they can be purchased. No one, however, knows for certain where the term originated; there are several plausible theories:

In the 1920s a comic strip character named Harold Teen and his friends spent a great amount of time at Pop's candy store. The store's name was the Sugar Bowl but Harold and company always called it the geedunk for reasons never explained.

The Chinese word meaning a place of idleness sounds something like "gee dung."

"Geedunk" is sound made by a vending machine when it dispenses a soft drink in a cup.

It may be derived from the German word "tunk" meaning to dip or sop either in gravy or coffee. Dunking was a common practice in days when bread, not always obtained fresh, needed a bit of "tunking" to soften it. The "ge" is a German unaccented prefix denoting repetition. In time it may have changed from getunk to geedunk.

Whatever theory we use to explain geedunk's origin, it doesn't alter the fact that Navy people are glad it all got started!

jennifercrazyplace and AKMom - You're both talking about the same thing ...and you're not... :-)

The page jennifer found is to explain what a NEX card is and that you can purchase one at a NEX. Basically it's like a ...say...Starbucks card. You can put money on it and use it up until it reaches 0 and then refill it (it says within 30 days if it reaches 0).

AKMom is talking about the fact that they are issued one of these at the beginning of BC. It has $150.00 on it ...and yes, it is used for their necessities during BC.The funds come out of their pay though. Also, like she said they do not need cash at BC...no where to spend it and nothing to spend it on! (It is preferred that they use their NEX card for purchases) They should have some left on the card for that "geedunk" after BS21!

So don't worry jennifer...it is not something you need to buy for your SR, K?But...Yes, you can purchase one at the NEX as a gift for your Sailor at PIR.

OK, I have a question!  Please help me understand this..LOL!  I say this on another pages  https://www.mynavyexchange.com/command/customer_service/gift_card.html

What are these used for?  Are they calling cards or like Navy refillable credit cards?  Should we buy these for our SR?  Help!!

Thanks!

Just remember Wednesdays and Thursdays are the best days for getting letters depending on where you live. I am in NC and Thursdays was always the best day for me to get letters. Three weeks in a row I got a letter on Thursday then the 4th Thursday no letter. I was a basket case wonder what could have happened, was she okay? Sick? hurt? I cried and cried. The next day my letter came lol. The mail was just late getting there. bootcamp was so hard for me and I never would have made it without this site :-) It is a lifesaver for sure.
