Correction:  I hope you hear from your SAILOR, shirley!  :-)

Comment by diannep on April 24, 2012 at 10:55am

We think that 131/132/924 went through BattleStations last night.  In that case, calls could start at about 2 pm GL time and could go for awhile.  I hope you get to talk to your SR, shirley.

WOW, just 3 more days and you will be in that PIR Hall waiting for those doors to open. Can you believe it is finally here? So exciting. Everyone Please PLEASE be careful as you travel and watch out for all the crazy drivers out there on the roads. If you are flying or driving allow yourself plenty of time and get an early start. We left 6 hours earlier than I planed because I was way too excited to sleep. If you are driving from far away like more than 10 hours please consider leaving a day earlier if possible and staying somewhere in the middle. Especially is you don't have someone to help with the driving so you can take turns sleeping. Don't let yourself drive tired it is as dangerous as driving drunk.

If you are planning to drive to the base: don't line up in the far right lane the morning of PIR. That lane ends, so stay to the left of it and it will save you lots of wait time. If time allows check your route the day before PIR. You may be able to drive past the base and turn around and come back from a different direction or the road across the street and have less of a wait by doing that.

When you get into the PIR Hall take some practice shots with your digital camera. Change your settings until you get the best pictures possible with the lighting and environment you are in. You may even try taking some with the flash on and some with it turned off to see which is better. Your pictures will come out much better and you will be glad you took the time to do it.

If you go to Gurnee Mills Mall keep track of the amount of time you have. That mall is huge and there are no pass through stores or hall ways to work as short cuts. It is Z shaped so if you start at one end you have to go back to where you started the same way you came. And, you don’t want to get your Sailor back to the base late.

If your Sailor tells you the day of PIR that they will be on a chartered flight you won’t get to meet them at the airport. They go straight from the base to the Jet and don’t come inside. This doesn’t happen very often but it did happen to us and we didn’t really say goodbye on Friday night because we thought we would have several hours with her at the airport. Had we known we wouldn’t see her at the airport our goodbye wood have been different and we wouldn’t have been at the airport searching for her.

Most of all have fun, enjoy the time with your new Sailor, catch up on 8 weeks worth of hugs and kisses (just not in public lol) and tell them all I said thanks so much for their service to our country and Bravo Zulu :-)
