Choose your Username.  For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either).  Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username.  While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups!  Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself!  Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility. 

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.  

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

For phone calls...always look forward to a call, but never expect one!!!!

Some get several calls, others get a total of three. The number of calls your SR is allowed may or may not have anything to do with them. They can be given and they can be taken away.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Waukegan, which was only 10 minutes away (without traffic).  We got up between 4:30 am to 5:00 am (just my 20 year old daughter and me), down to the delicious hot serve yourself breakfast (waffle, biscuit & gravy, cinnamon roll, coffee) at 6:00 am.  Sarge's Taxi shuttle picked us up at 6:25 am, At RTC walking to the ceremony hall at 6:45 am.  In our seats underneath the bleachers against the back wall by just after 7:00 am.  We got the last 2 spots available on that upper row of seats!  The doors were opened earlier due to the briskly cold morning!!  Hope that helps with your planning.  We had a rental car, but wanted to skip the line of cars so we had the honor of  Sarge himself picking us up~~

It was 6 calls covering the entire Boot Camp time.  My Sailor daughter is now in Pensacola studying IT.

If you got the "I'm Here" call, that was #1.  Just always have your phone charged and with you and look for "847" to show on it!

Thanks ellen0502 for the timing--it might make a difference--I don't know how early everyone is wanting to get up!   Also thanks for the link--the daughter who spends a lot of time there is makeing plans for restaraunts etc for after graduation....

shirleyann, I was asking about staying downtown because it will still take you a little over an hour to get from the Ogilvie Station to the Great Lakes Station, and the same on the return. You would have to take either the 5:45am or the 6:33am train to get to PIR on time those would be the only two options. :)

Pedestrian traffic is allowed through as the shuttles drop off outside of RTC. The Metra (this is the metrolink) train parking lot is right outside RTC as well. (This is the same one that diannep and Ellen mentioned).

There is no security check at the gate where you enter base for pedestrians. Vehicles are stopped and checked for the Vehicle Gate Pass and drivers ID, but this pertains to the vehicle ownership and security vehicle-wise.

The Security checkpoint for guests to verify themselves to enter Midway Ceremonial Drill Hall for PIR is inside the Visitors Center (the USS Yorktown)
