I would plan to stay the weekend just in case, especially since it is a holiday weekend. The navy changes things all the time and even with it written in the contract it can change. They usually get their final paperwork with travel on it one or two days before PIR. One of the most important things I have learned about the Navy is nothing is ever written in stone and you have to be flexible because you never know when those changes could take place. It's one of the reasons I drove that way if we got more time with her we could stay and if she left we could leave. I hope you all get the weekend with your Sailors, that would be awesome :-)

Hi Amber, if your SR will be staying in GL for school he would get the chance to spend the weekend with you or your Family. But if their going to school somewhere else they should have already know when they will be leaving. My SR is flying to FL the next day after graduation and it is in her contract that i have or my copy.

Excited to see others in our Div - hope to get to know you all!

Amber it is so great to hear from you!  Our recruits surely know each other.  Look forward to meeting you.

Yep, that's the truth, Betsy!  You never know when they change the rules!.  Follow Betsy's advice and plan your return on Sunday night or even Monday, if possible.  Just in case.  My son flew to Meridian MS the day after PIR when he was there...but that doesn't mean anything.

That is July 4th weekend...sorta.  I know that is on a Wed, but maybe lots of travelers are taking some time off then and flights may be hard to book on Sat.

That could be why they told the SRs that they may not be able to leave until Monday.  That would be wonderful for the families!

Comment by Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor on June 12, 2012 at 5:14pm

Oh just wanted to add that the new sailors who are staying at GL for A school will most likely have Sat. & Sun to spend with family.  I haven't heard of those shipping out having that much time, but it's always possible.  They change the rules on us all the time.

Comment by Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor on June 12, 2012 at 5:13pm

Amber, we usually do recommend that you plan to leave GL on Sunday afternoon, in the chance that your new sailor may have a little more time to spend with you.  There is no way of knowing for sure unless your SR hears something concrete and passes it on to you.  They may possibly be hearing that, so I would keep checking with your SR.

Comment by Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor on June 12, 2012 at 4:15pm

I agree with Diannep, SW was a great choice for us too and we did fly out of Milwaukee.  It was a very easy drive to GL.  Don't forget to think about Priceline for a rental car, if needed.  I have used them before and have rented cars for less than $15 a day.

...meant to say "less traffic, sometimes cheaper."  Always less traffic than Chicago!
