Just FYI, if any of you are staying at the comfort inn, the shuttle is free to PIR. We stayed there and the rooms were nice and clean. I usually stay at motel 6's in california so I thought they were a step up...lmao....I have stayed at a marriott before and they are nice, but I figured that we wouldn't be in the room that much anyways, so we decided to stay at the comfort inn. I was glad we did...Just thought I would let you all know...:)
ooolala, i'm so excited. Made my reservations last nite. Will be at the Courtyard on the 6th and 7th. Decided to go to Red carpet for first nite because we will be getting in late and its cheap. My SR's girlfriends father had enough points for a free room at the Marriott Courtyard. I love that place as i stayed in them in florida while i commuted for Spirit Airlines for about two months. Now, just waiting on a letter or call. Have a great day guys.
For those who may want to bring pets to reunite with your sailors, Residence Inn is pet friendly! They have studios and the larger 2 bdrm 2 bth suites, all with full kitchens. Check out their PIR rates, and AAA/AARP/millitary rates. We stayed there a couple of yrs ago and liked it. Free buffet breakfast, served earlier on PIR day. We used our AAA rate when there.
MamaHouz: The shuttles are actually taxis operating as shuttles that morning for PIR. They charge $3/pp each way. Sailor usually returns to hotel with you for free. Sarge has his own taxi service...he may charge the same rate for PIR transportation....I'm not sure. Some who use his services for the entire weekend may get a "pkg" rate from him. If you are interested in using his services, just text him. 847-212-0246 He is good about getting back to you with info.
The Courtyard is about 4-5 miles from RTC. Springhill Suites and Residence Inn are all in that same area and are all Marriotts, with the PIR shuttle service. Sarge's MeetNGreet is in that area also (held on Thurs night). All friends/family members of sailors are invited, including children.
TeacherMom: I agree with Lala. Bring all of the grandparents. Arrive early at RTC. Chances are, they will all get in and may not even have to wait. If they do have to wait, they wait in the Visitors Center and are allowed in right before PIR starts. But we don't hear of this happening too often. Seems that they usually get in right away. Like Lala said, we still don't know how many divisions are in this PIR group but we have seen PIR groups with 14 divisions still have all extras get in.
For those who have a car with them driving onto the base isn't that bad. We did it and had no problems. We had a large PIR group of 13 divisions. We left the Navy Lodge at about 6:40 and got in line. We were early enough to park in the parking lot by the Chapel and were through the check in line and seat in the ceremony hall in less than an hour. The thing is to leave as early as possible. Avoid the far right lane when getting in line. That lane ends and you will have to merge to the left one lane. You will by-pass a lot of cars and save yourself some wait time by doing that. Some people have even driven past the base and turned around and came back for an even shorter line or made a left turn in front of the base and turned around and came back from that street. When you get there on Thursday go for a drive and check the route and figure out your plan. You know you are going to drive by that base and try to sneak a peak anyway. Just no hopping over the fence lol.
As far as the list goes maybe he could put the two grandmothers on the list. Then take all the grandparents. In most cases the extra guests will get in and sometimes they don't even have to wait. We are unsure how many divisions will be in this group. For my daughter's PIR there were 13 divisions and we took four extra guests. All the extras got in without any problems. If this is a large PIR group they may make the extras wait in the visitors center until all the guests on the list are seated. If they make them wait then you can just spread out a little and save them a seat. I would get there as early as possible because it is first come first served and they may not have to wait if they are there very early. If it is a small PIR group like 11 DIV or less they probably won't even have to wait.
Momship, thanks for all of helpful information. I have a couple of questions, was the shuttle with sarge or through the hotel and how far is the Marriot from the base and downtown Chicago. Thank you so much and The Best of Luck to your Sailor!
Thanks diannep.
katyellen: Those staying in GL for A School usually have daytime liberty with family Fri, Sat, Sun. They have to be back at night. They may miss some for "watches."
Those who are flying out usually do so on Sat. But sometimes they go on Sunday. You can visit with them at the airports that day...meet them there and get a gate pass to wait for their planes to leave. You must be willing to arrive in the wee hours of the morning since they are usually bussed out early to wait on flights. The USO personnel are in charge of the sailors when they arrive at the airports and are very helpful to all Navy families!
