SueCasa - BU is Builder. He just finished BU school last December. Seabees receive combat training along with their individual rating training...but I'm still waiting for that one with mine! Don't know when that'll happen.
As a reservist things move rather slow at times. One weekend a month to get all of the paperwork done. Mine was in Ventura as well...but now has a spot with a unit in Coronado. He was instructed to "apply" (?) for a unit and wait to be accepted...so that took six months. BUT I am glad that he is with a unit! Yes, he does so far...but he hasn't really done anything yet. LOL He had actually looked into SW-Steel Worker but that was not available.
How exciting that your son will follow in his grandfathers footsteps. My Father was a Lt.CMDR in the Navy (before I was born). You know...I don't know what his rating was though! I'll have to hunt that up.
suecasa, did you find out what he wanted you to bring?
Good Morning all! Safe travel to GL today and enjoy the MeetandGreets tonight.
Remember, leave early for PIR! Enjoy!
FTLW--thank you so much for the great information! I'm still learning all of the Navy lingo--what is "BU"? Also, how long has your sailor been a Seabee, does he enjoy it, and how is it being in the Reserves?
Safe travels to you all!
I know this is late...but I will add a MAPS of RTC DIscussion up above...just in case.
SueCasa - Our son is a Seabee reservist as well...he is a BU.
Since your son will be "in holding" on RTC there is a name for it THU - Temporary Holding Unit on Ship 5.
He may get the weekend for Liberty with you and will follow RTC liberty policies. Come Monday he will be assigned work to do during the week.
It is a good probability that he will be allowed his cell phone. One of the Sailors in my sons PIR had one on base and he asked him why he was able to have it. He explained that he was "on hold".
I do not know if he will be allowed other electronics...or what his next command allows as he will have to INDOC and then Phase up and all have slightly different policies. I would bring what he asks for and be prepared to take it home with you.
Congrats and safe travels!
Got a surprise call, while pumping gas, from my Sailor. He will be leaving for Pensacola in the wee hours of Mon. Said he is going with a group. Will work for a couple of weeks there before going to A School. Wants his phone, laptop and boxers!
Congrats to 247/248!
I just heard from him. After having a special physical and x-ray, a slight curvature was detected so he is no longer eligible for aircrew. He is really excited to be a Seabee like his grandfather was! He will be in the holding unit for a couple of weeks and then will ship out to Ft. Leonard Wood. Can't wait to see him! Oh, and he can't wait for regular underwear! :-)
