"How can I get my Sailors carry on items (cell phone computer etc. that he is allowed to take) to them if I can't meet them at the Airport? Is there anyway they may take them back to RTC with them after Liberty?"
Well...some members meet up with others that can make it to the AP and ask them to give it to their Sailor. Otherwise...you will have to mail it...no civilian items may return with the Sailor back to RTC after Liberty.
Here's the Rules on Liberty Page on the RTC Website and Family Guide links:
This was just asked so I'll address it now...about Liberty and planning your stay.
Is it possible for my "A" school Sailor to fly out on Sunday rather than Saturday?
It is possible. It depends on flight availibilty. They fly commercial. We advise that if you can (funds and timewise) book through until late Sunday...just in case.
This happened to me BTW...see my post on " After PIR – Liberty; Sailors Departures from RTC " I booked through until Sunday even though my son was supposed to fly out the next day! We had a Thursday PIR and it was Memorial day weekend...but I have seen it happen on regular weekends too...and read,"I wish I had known..." we do the best we can...some just miss the post, don't ask, or don't see the Discussion up above.
Once in a blue moon they have a chartered flight, (if there are lots going to the same place), not very common though LaLa's daughter had one. In those instances...you can't even meet them at the airport. I'll let her post about that. It is more rare.
I drove...the Parking Garage is at the south end from Midway hall...and at first glance on a Mapquest (which looks REALLY old if you go to satelite view and zoom in...lots of dirt!)...looks far away from it. It actually feeds into the Visitors Center...the USS Yorktown. Which then feeds into Midway Ceremonial Drill Hall. There are various "museumlike" scenarios of Recruit Training (and security with dogs) within the VC to look at while you are in line for the security checkpoint...if you can remember to look at them! I did not, and wish I could go back!
The Shuttles drop you off at a staging point just inside Gate 8...which is closer to the North end of Midway Hall. From there it is about a 100 foot walk to the North end entrance (is there an entrance there any vet moms?...or is it the West side...in which case it is about 300 ft.) I have heard from recent PIR's that moms that have been told it is a shorter distance (which technically it is from the shuttle) you will be waiting outside in the elements. BUT if you walk around to the South entrance (Parking Garage side) you will be waiting inside.
Even if you take the Shuttle BUT you decide to drive your Sailor back to RTC and are allowed entrance to drop them off either at the Parking Garage or across the base at the Chapel parking lot...you will need a vehicle pass. If not, you will have to drop them off at the Gate...which means extra walking time. Sailors are not allowed to run...or "double time it" back to their Ships...only walk.
The Ships are South and SW of Midway Hall. Civilians are not allowed South past the Chapel or the Parking Garage.
I'll post some Maps of RTC (these are public knowledge.)
Here is some additional info on the Navy Lodge:
I stay military when I can...hubby has been AF Reserves for 27 years, son is the Sailor...so I have dependant ID. You don't need it for this Navy Lodge. You tell them it is for PIR and they may ask for your Recruits Name and Rate (Navy enlisted have "rate" not rank...it coincides with their pay grade E-1 to E-9 for enlisted. E-3 is the highest rate they can "rank up" too in BC). They may also ask you to bring them by to verify...but I always forget if that is enforced.
It is clean, I did not get a kitchenette as those are first come first serve. We had to queens and a rollaway.TV with DVD player, microwave, small fridge etc. Had nice furniture and a lobby with a fireplace. Hot coffee 24/7. Vending machines (variety...even one with alcohol! You have to get tokens at the desk for this.) Coin laundry, You can buy Computer time (these look exactly like the ones I saw in Recruit phone Computer room at the NEX) and pay for printer usage. Computers are in front of the elevators on each floor. WiFi has a charge. They do not have a Shuttle Service...but you can ask to arrange for a taxi...again here is where Sarge can come in handy!(SARGE AT 847-212-0246)
Lobby has DVD's for rent, post cards and a Curio with some Navy items for sale. They will give you a temporary pass to use at the small NEX down the road...there is also a gas station (don't need a pass for that).
It runs about $65.00 a night...no tax.
Here is a pic of the pass (courtesy of Craig):
They do a brown bag breakfast daily...was great for PIR. Bagel, cream cheese, chewy granola bar and large OJ...all in this bag:
Was great for PIR! I don't have pictures of the outside...only our messy hotel room!
The NL is about 1.5 miles from RTC. It is not on base but it is in some of the base housing area.
Here is a Mapquest from the Navy Lodge to Ohio Street, Gate 8 of RTC:
thanks Miss Lala :)
I just booked a suite at the Lodge. and planning on driving our car to PIR. Since it will be more personal with my son. thanks so much
Jakes_Mom92, we stayed at the navy Lodge and drove to base and had no problems at all.
Help...looking for info or recommendations for reservations for the Navy Lodge. There is no shuttle to the base but if we drive onto the base, will it be easy to get our way to the auditorium for graduation
Gina, we are not sure yet haw many Training groups this PIR will have. I believe they will post it on Recruit Training Command Website this week. As oon as we know we will post it here :-)
megan, I will try to find others on facebook pages and let them know you are looking for them here :-)
