megan:  I totally agree with everything Betsy said!  She is talking from her own experience, and there have been many others who have had the same experience flying Southwest into Milwaukee.  Only thing to consider is this:

If your sailor will be flying out to A School, most likely that will be from either Midway or OHare.  You will be allowed to meet/wait with your sailor at the airport until departure.  So in that case, make sure that your return Milwaukee flight is later in the day or the next day.  We always recommend you all try and book out on Sunday late afternoon or evening anyway, just in case.  Although most of the sailors will fly out on Saturday, sometimes they will wait until Sunday.

Those with sailors staying in GL for A School should definitely book out late Sunday or Monday because their sailors should have weekend daytime liberty...and I understand that it isn't over until maybe 8 pm?  So you want as much time with your sailors as possible!

If you haven't received your form letter yet, I would definitely wait til you get that.  You will still have time to book your flight and a few days shouldn't matter that much in price.  That being said, it is easy to drive from Milwaukee, especially if you don't want to deal with going around the city of Chicago.  My husband's parents lived in Wisconsin and my husband lived in Chicago for quite awhile and we also preferred flying into Milwaukee.

Oops, forgot to say that SW flies into Milwaukee, which is actually only about a 45 minute drive to Great Lakes.  A lot of ladies forget about Milwaukee being so close to Great Lakes. It's an easy drive on the interstate.

megan, have you tried Southwest?  I live in Maryland too and that's all I fly.  You are also allowed 2 free bags and if you have to change your flight for any reason, there usually is no fee.

mona, yes that is a great idea, as some of the hotels do book up quickly.  If for any reason that you have to cancel or change the date, most hotels are very good about that.

Should we go on and start making room reservations?  Also, has anyone ever used a mode of transportation called megabus?

Good morning all!

Just a reminder....the mail is held from the SRs for the first two weeks.  This is because they are training the Recruit Mail Petty Officers who will be handling the mail for his/her division.  Once the mail is handed out to them for the first time (usually a Sunday, but recently a group had their first mail handed out on a Fri)...then they should receive mail M-F.

For those using the address given by the recruiter, be sure to check that with the form letter address when your form letter arrives.  The form letter address is the correct one should there be a discrepancy.  The recruiters get the addresses off their computers and sometimes there are changes.  Don't worry...if you mailed to the recruiter's address and it turned out to be wrong, the letters should still arrive ...just may be delayed a bit.

Comment by Lala Ribbon Queen PIR Ribbons on June 21, 2012 at 7:47am

Hi everyone, I am Lora, aka Lala the PIR Ribbon Queen from NC. I am one of the veteran moms who spends time on the PIR group pages helping answer any questions you have. I am so excited for this group to be formed. I have a daughter, 22, who is Sailor in VA. She left for boot camp May 25th 2010 and had PIR in July, 23 2010 so I have been on this site for 2 years. Memorial day weekend was her first weekend at boot camp. After boot camp the time goes by so fast. She was recently home for 6 days on leave for her brother and step-sisters graduation so we enjoyed her time with us for sure.  The last two years have really flown by. Her husband is also a Sailor in VA and his PIR was Oct 2010. We give him a really hard time because she outranks him lol. We have experienced lots of different things through this journey and I am here to help you. If you have any questions at all please ask them here on this page and one of us will do our best to answer it for you.Or you can send me a private message if you like.  My Sailor was in the performing division 936 and was in the choir. For now the best advice is to write letters every day if you can. Even if your SR said not to, do it anyway. They quickly change their mind and love hearing their name called for mail call. It is like Christmas to them and they say the letters are what gets them through the next day. Try not to worry if the first couple of letters seem down or sad. This is normal and it does get better. You will be able to tell a difference in them with each letter you receive. I know this is hard but be strong, you can do this. And on the days when you feel like you can't come to this page and we will help you through it :-) I know you are looking forward to those first letters and calls :-) And I look forward to getting to know all of you and hearing more about your soon to be Sailors :-) my email is: uniquememorymakers@yahoo.com
