Sam, Since your son is staying in GL for A School, you should have about an hour after PIR on Friday with your son before he has to report back to his ship to move over to the base for A School. They pack up their things and then are taken by bus across the street to school.
Once he is all checked in he will get another liberty call, this comes anywhere from about 2:30 to 4:00ish and you will be able to go get him. He will probably have to be back and to his ship at 10pm.
Most likely he will also have liberty from approx 6am to 10pm both Sat and Sun. Your sailor will know for sure.
Now for Friday, I recommend that you wait at the visitors center for him to call, get there around 2:30ish. One of my best experiences waiting, was listening and watching all the groups coming to the gate for liberty. They march from their ships and it is quite a distance, and you can here them coming, listening to the cadence calls is great fun. The anticipation as to whether your sailor is in the group coming is almost as good as waiting for that door to open at PIR.
On Sat and Sun you must check him out of his ship. You will meet him at the gate, and then go back to his ship with him to check him out. If you have kept your gate pass to PIR you may be able to drive on to base back to his ship to check him out in the morning and back in at night, if you can't use it (so may variables on driving on to base) you will have to walk back to his ship with him. Be prepared it is a long walk.
Always allow plenty of time for your sailor to return, don't think that 15 minutes before liberty is over is enough, IT IS NOT. Second most important when you return him to base is you must go with him and check him back in.
My son leaves in the early hours Sat morning for A school my question how can we get his things to him that he will need at A school? I was hoping to take a suitcase of clothes that he would need at A school can I do this? Also his phone I have read somewhere that they couldn't have their phone at A school is this true?
Jmaries: PIR is on Friday and they don't have any leave on PIR Day (just the GL A School sailors move over there after PIR). Many will leave on Sat. They will be bussed in the wee hours of the morning to wait for flights. Sometimes they don't leave until Sunday, depending on flight availalibility. That just happened in a recent group.
Sometimes the SRs/sailors are told by the RDCs that they will leave on PIR day, but it doesn't happen. Maybe what they mean is that they only have that day with their family members and they assume they are leaving that night because they have to return to RTC.
At least....this hasn't happened before....so unless things have changed, thinking that Sat. and Sun. are departure days for those flying out.
Are there any mom's of new sailors, were told they might be leaving for their A-schools the day after graduation, rather than early saturday morning. If we can't talk about this on here, please send me a personal message. thank you.
Good Morning Ladies!
Congrats to all the New Sailors and of course their families. Those calls are so AWESOME!!!!
Any word on who won Captains Cup?
Captains Cup going on now with your SRs/sailors! Fun and competitive day for them! It is a morning activity. Hope that some get to make calls this afternoon. If so, please post who won! They can have up to 3 winners:
all-male division winner
integrated (male/female) winner
motivational chant winner
*It is possible the either the all-male or integrated winner can also win the motivational chant award. Otherwise, a 3rd division will win it.
