N4M's Community Guidelines

OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Hi. My son is in Ship 13 Div 333. He's my one and only and turned 18 a week before he left (7/3). I'm retired navy (got out when I had him) but I'll tell ya its different on this side. As a single mom, I feel so lost without him .....
I am, however, excited about the journey our kids are on.

So excited to get that form letter today.  Off to write more letters now that the address is here.  We are looking forward to PIR and meeting some other parents when we arrive.  Our SR is on Ship 12, Div 332.

GO NAVY!

One more reminder:  Keep that form letter in a safe place.  You will need the password that your SR wrote in there to download the PIR gate pass about 11 days before PIR.  If for some reason, your SR wrote in no password, please write and ask your SR for it.

Donna:  Glad to have such a "seasoned" Navy mom/wife on the site!  You will be able to help out alot!  :-)

As far as getting personal items to your new sailors for A School....if they are flying out to A School, this most likely will happen the day after PIR (they are actually bussed PIR night, late and into the wee hours, to wait for flights).  You can meet them at the airport and hand off some personal items, including phones, laptops, and even a few civilian clothes that they can have with them for when they "phase up" at A School and can wear them.  For those with sailors moving over to GL A School, this will happen shortly after PIR is over...then you will have Liberty with them...and they can return to base with these personal items.  Liberty for those staying in GL for A School will be Daytime Liberty through the weekend!  YAH!

You can also mail them clothing and personal items once they arrive at A School.

...be sure to ask for the Navy Grad rate at whatever hotel you book.  Compare that rate with other discount rates you may have.  We used AAA when we were there....sometimes rates like that may be cheaper.

MontanaMom:  Just be sure if you book through an internet travel discount site that you are aware of penalties if you have to cancel/change.  Sometimes the fees on some of them can be strict.

Comment by diannep on July 17, 2013 at 6:45pm

Welcome to the new members!  Yes, it is not too early to make hotel reservations, for sure.  You can cancel those usually up to day of arrival....with no penalty...if need be.  Check on Southwest for air travel....they fly into Chicago-Midway and Milwaukee.  Milwaukee is less traffic, usually car rental is cheaper there too.  About 45 minutes to GL from there; about an hour+, depending on traffic, from Midway.  Your first 2 bags check for free on Southwest and there is no change fee if you have to change dates (if you have to cancel reservations for any reason, the ticket is good for a year).

Hotels recommended by others on here are:

Navy Lodge (tell them it is for Navy graduation and book in your SR's name)

Springhill Suites-Waukegan/Gurnee

Courtyard Inn-Waukegan/Gurnee

Residence Inn-Waukegan/Gurnee (we stayed here....very nice...pet friendly too)

Holiday Inn Express Waukegan/Gurnee

The night before PIR, there are some MeetandGreets held for you all.  Sarge's is the one with the most info and he meets very close to the hotels I listed above (Navy Lodge is a little further away, but not far).  More info on those later!  But....if you look to the right of this screen under EVENTS, you will see the MeetandGreets listed for other PIR groups.  You can look at one of those for info...once your date is listed over there, you can RSVP there.

Welcome to the group!
