Oh my goodness, Jessica! I hope you are doing well.

Adam may be the oldest of our little group so far, Kim. I have a son who will be 21 in September. He works full time and is always talking about going to college but never does it. He used to consider the Air Force, but has written that off for the time being. My husband is a soccer nut, too. He played through college at University of St Louis and is trying to turn our two littlest into soccer stars.

Maureen - if you want to write, just write! The newest thing up and coming are blogs geared toward children. You could be on the cutting edge.

Lynn, if they can get PT for too many letters, what do you think would happen with an unannounced visitor??? My mom and her friend are visiting Chicago for his Navy reunion or something over Labor Day. My mom told me the other day that Dennis told her that on Sundays the recruits have lots of free time and they'll go get him and take him to lunch. Did I mention that my mom's "friend" has dementia? And my mom? Well, we won't go into that just yet. I can just see these two crazy old people trying to bust into boot camp. I tried to talk her out of it but she is pretty sure her friend with dementia knows more about it than me.

I work for the City of Gainesville at the utility as a Senior Staff Assistant. Adam is my only child, and I have been divorced about 9 months. Have lived in Florida about 8 years and Kentucky before that, which you will be able to tell immediately upon meeting me. LOL

Adam is 21 and has finished 1.5 years of college already, but has only been working the last year or so and not doing any school, so this is going to be so good for him. He eats, sleeps and breathes soccer so is in very good shape. During the physical training he did in the DEP program, they tried to get him to become a SEAL. He declined and is heading toward the pilot program instead.

Maureen62 - Personally, it really helped me when I would see another Mom post the "truth" in a letter she received. It let me know that my son wasn't the only one feeling that way or hurting that way. Not that I would of thought less of him, but it was just so reassuring. The old saying says "the truth hurts", but I like the one that says "and the truth shall set you free".

I am currently drowning in my holiday book project that is due on August 1. Staying completely AWAY from recipes.

Jessica, you're a teacher, right? And Kim? What do you do?

That sounds wonderfu Michelle...to write cook books. Always wanted to write a childrens book but never have come up with a good character to write about that would hold their attention.
I am a travel agent and work from home. Travel has been slow since the economy so I have been looking for at least a part time job.
Thanks Kim.....Im glad you all are here with me :)

Maureen~don't worry at all about bumming anyone else out....we are as much of a family now as our kids are, and we will laugh together and cry together too. I am sure they will start bonding and will be fine....hopefully :-)

So I thought it might be fun to get to know each other a bit better completely aside from our recruits. Some of us covered who has other children at home and their ages today. I'm curious about what everyone does.

I am mostly a stay at home mom but I also write cookbooks.

Maureen, I am expecting the exact same thing from Mr. Greg. He is not the most, um, energetic person. He graduated a year ago and hasn't done a thing all year other than go to DEP meetings and hang out. He did pass the assessments that his recruiter did in May and July so he was doing a bit of training, but he pretty much hung out with friends, played video games, went to movies, things like that. Slept till noon, ate like crap, all of that. So getting up at 4 am to be yelled at and exercise is going to be quite an adjustment.

Morning ladies (it's before noon in Calif, so I'm safe to say this!).

JessicaB - great job keeping them informed!

I wanted to add something to the answer for the question: How many people can go to PIR? Four adults, however they do not place a minimum on the number of kids 12 and under who can go! But those kids need ID's (birth certs, passport if they have one). So, if you have a family of 8 and four of them are 12 or under, all can go!

Those first letters are going to be crazy. Some say they love it, some say it's like prison, some say "i don't think I can do this mom" (that was my son), some are very mad and want to throttle their recruiter. Some like all the PT they do and want more (Physical Training), some HATE all the IT they are given (Intense Training - very long and hard physical training because someone or all of the messed up). Some already HATE their RDC (Recruit Division Commander) and/or their Petty Officers. This is why they don't use real bullets when they practice their weapons exercises - because they would have a lot of dead RDC's!!

So prepare yourselves for the up's and down's and promise me you will do the following: In your letters, always acknowledge how they feel - so they know you heard them! And whether the letter is good or bad, always give them inspiration and motivation to go on and to work as a team. Tell them about the simple things going on at home - even if it sounds boring to you, they want to hear it.

Okay, I'll get off the podium for now!!! I am at work and should not be on this site!

I surely hope that my news from David wont bum anyone else out....wasnt meant that way at all. Like I said, Im just sure that after going through indock, long lines, shots and lack of sleep, he felt that way. Of course will know more when he writes again. One thing I did forget to mention he did write after he said he hated it there " I guess I should just get over that fast" ....so I believe that its just a feel sorry for me moment.
Jessica...will ask Jerry about the encouraging part. I would like to think so.
