OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance. Please take the time
to read the OPSEC and Community Guidelines. A quick note here: Last Names of Sailors/Recruits are not allowed on this site. If it is in your username you will need to change your username. If yours is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended. First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

So Craig....if my son is AD what would they call him?

Comment by Craig on August 4, 2012 at 2:21am

Lala - You should really mess with your daughter.  She's a AOAN and will be taking the advancement test, and if she makes it will be an AO3.  However...

This is what you do.  Next time you call her, tell her "I understand that if you pass your advancement test you will be a BB3".  She'll think your crazy!...  then you will explain that you know more than her about her rating.

What does this mean?

In the Navy, the sailors call each other by different terms.  Some are:

Submarine guys = "Bubbleheads"

Air ratings = "Airdales"

Engineers = "Snipes"

Cryptology = "Spooks"

Construction = "Seabee"

Nuclear power = "Nukes"

However, within each group we also have names for the different ratings.  Some are:

ABF Aviation Boatswains Mate Fuels = "Grapes"

HT Hull Maintenance Technician = "Turd Chaser"

BM Boatswains Mate = "Boats" or "Rope Dopes"

BT Boiler Technician = "Bilge Turd"

MC Mass Communications Specialist = "Shutterbug".

EM Electricians Mate = "Sparky"

HM Hospital Corpsman = "****" (never mind)

QM Quartermaster = "Wheels"

AG Aerographers Mate = "Weather Guesser"

STG Sonar Technician = "Ping Jockey"

MM Machinist Mate = "Monkey's Mate"

ET Electronics Technician = "Twidget"

GM Gunners Mate = "Gun Monkey"

DT (Now HM's) Dental Technician = "Tooth Fairy"

YN Yeoman = "Yoyo's" or "Quills"

AO Aviation Ordinanceman =  "BB Stacker".

So Lala, your daughter is a "BB Stacker".  She loads the ammo like a BB gun.  So call her a "BB Stacker".  Say she will be a BB3.

Yes, correct, ellen.  Usually first mail delivery/letter writing is on a Sunday, but occasionally we hear it happening a few days before that.  Maybe just a matter of the Mail Officer getting trained a bit more quickly?  Not sure.

Comment by ellen0502 on August 3, 2012 at 7:02pm

Mail is not really held from your SRs.

A recruit has to be trained in how to handle the mail and it can take a couple of weeks for that to happen. Once they have been trained for handling the mail, all the mail that has arrived prior to completing the training is delivered (usually on Sunday from what I understand). After that mail arrives as normal.

Comment by Suwigg (Mom - LS2/Italy) on August 3, 2012 at 6:44pm

I just read on another post the the SRs' mail is held for two weeks.  Is that two weeks from their arrival date?  I realize it is not exact, but I'm wondering about when all my letters will land in my son's hands.
