I'm seeing The Residence Inn and Ramada mentioned alot as places to stay. Any thoughts on The Navy Lodge? Which is the closest and easiest to PIR?
Thanks I'm sure this is a repeat question so thanks for putting up with it =o)
Oh my goodness, Dianne. I could imagine you on that roof. Yikes!
Sub Dad: We are Hurricane Andrew survivors down in my area of Miami. What an awful experience. Born and raised in Miami and never had something like that one. Sounded like the army was marching on our roof (tiles/paper were flying off--water pouring in from roof into all under the 2nd floor roof....95 percent of our house). Thank God we had shutters on our windows....thanks to ME....had a hurricane threaten just a year after buying our home in 80, so I insisted on them (hubby was from central AL and had no clue about hurricanes, but I remembered). We were the only ones on the block with them in1992 for Andrew. Everyone else had the storm in the house between roof damage and broken windows. It was a horrific storm....a year of redoing and we were good to go (over $100,000 of insurance money later!).
So we measure all storms to that one now. Isaac was more of a nuisance, but caused power outages and flooding. Just yard debris damage in our area....but the storm went on forever....about 2 days worth of rain bands/wind but doable. Yep, I put up my shutters! My son thought I was ridiculous...but I was taking no chances....so climbed onto my roof to install the 2nd floor ones...and got yelled at on the phone by my son (who was at work putting up shutters and wanted me to wait for him) and my neighbor who gave me "the look" as he walked by and held the ladder for me to come down. But...we do what we have to do when a storm threatens! Still have most of the 2nd floor shutters up. Cave-like up there....but DO need son's help to take down and he is out of town this week. Well, I'm prepared if another one comes now! :-)
So, yes, we are grateful for small blessings....the counties above us (Broward and Palm Beach) are flooded however and many still had no power as of last night There are electric company trucks in from other states helping.
Sub Dad: Remember....Sarge's will be held at the "Sundance SALOON." Uh hum....
...maybe the guys are just initimidated by Sarge??? :-) Ok, so you will miss lots of good info over there! Maybe you can go to both? Some do that.
OOOPS, navymom, wrong link below. That is just the ship numbers/addresses. Here is something on NavyDads that shows the names of the ship. Not necessary to include that in the address however. But interesting to know:
http://www.navydads.com/forum/topics/ship-names-at-navy-boot-camp
SRMom: No problem with how he listed the names. On the official sheet up there, he would have put the full names. No worries! They can also update their lists a couple of weeks before PIR.
hawwbe: Many of the hotels use the PIR shuttle service, but I believe I was told that Ramada has its own shuttle. However, not sure if it goes real early? Someone has posted in the past that it left at 7:30. You may want to check with the hotel on that. For this sized group, that will put you right in the crowds. We recommend that you all be on your way over there by 6:30 if possible. Better for choice in seating and to avoid lines. This is a very large PIR group so it will be crowded.
Springhill Suites/Courtyard Inn/Residence all use the PIR shuttles and have earlier shuttles leaving. I would check out their rates. Be sure to ask for the Navy Grad rate.
I can personally say that Residence is a great one. Betsy stayed there too and had the same experience as we did. Can be a little pricey, but the studios are a little cheaper. Nice for larger groups since they also have 2 bdrm 2 bth units with a sleeper sofa in the living room, all with full kitchens, and pet friendly--free hot buffet breakfast too.
navymom: Here is the link that shows the ships (barracks) names:
Domsmom, My son is also in ship 003 what do you mean it is the hopper and where do you find all that info?
we r staying at the residence inn. heard good things about it from this site.
