Darthvadersmom, she could always join this group as we do have many wives and gf's on here as well. She could also go through the list of groups at the top of the page for a group for Navy Wives. I know there are some on here.
Sub Dad, I stayed at the Navy Lodge, enjoyed it and will go back and stay there again when I visit my son.
Quiet neighborhood (it sits in the family housing subdivision), clean rooms etc. I would highly recommend it if you are looking for a place to sleep and shower and not be "entertained" with a pool, arcade room etc.
There is not a restaurant at the hotel, but plenty are close enough. They do have a "bag" breakfast in the mornings, bagels, cream cheese, granola bar and orange juice, perfect to take with you to PIR too. You are also given a temporary NEX card, you can visit the NEX stores off base and purchase without your sailor being with you (it is limited no tobacco, no alcohol)
Walking to RTC would be difficult as the streets you will need to follow do not all have sidewalks and are "main" roads. Yes, the only entrance is off Buckley Road.
FTLW had a post that she will put up here shortly about the Navy Lodge.
Sub Dad: FTLW, Lala, or ellen will have the answer to that one. They all stayed there. I was a Residence Inn "woman" when I went. Feel free to message any of them if your post gets buried in the others! I believe that Navy Lodge is about 1.5 miles from RTC. You may want to jog..... :-)
Darthvadersmom: Mail call is M-F. And the most important time of the day for them! So write write write write write....did I mention....to write??? :-)
And of course we all KNOW that your child would never do anything wrong....because he is just like mine! HAA!
SRMom: Although some of the SRs may end up together at A School, the divisions are non-existent after bootcamp. It is a whole new "thing!"
Sub Dad: We highly recommend Sarge's MeetandGreet! He is a wealth of knowledge (retired military in the area for over 30 yrs), has a transportation service for Navy families/sailors on A School base (gives good rates too!), and is a wonderful guy. We get rave reviews on here about him. He pays for the food at Sundance Saloon out of his own pocket and I hear it is great food! He will accept any donations that you all want to give though... :-) You can call him or text him about anything. He even knows a restaurant where your sailors can eat for free (including steak!) run by a friend of his.
Keep his number handy 847-212-0246
I have never heard of anyone who regretted going to his MeetandGreet or using his transportation service...either from/to airport, to PIR and around town with you and your new sailors, or all of the above! Betsy will tell you that they love him on GL A School base. Her son was there and used her services often! Many don't have cars at A School and Sarge is their "buddy" to get them where they need to go.
Question~do the divisions stay together when they leave for A school or will that be a whole new group when he gets to Pensacola?
AMEN, Only8Weeks on the "college kids vs bootcamp kids" comparison!
jewel: To add on to Betsy's post about the number of SRs in each division....they start with about 88 in each. They lose some during training...some are discharged, some are asmoed (setback) for one reason or another. Then they gain some back from earlier PIR groups who were asmoed but now are ready to resume training. They usually graduate with between 65-75 sailors per division. So for this group, which looks like you will have 14 divisions (large!)....that could be from 900 to over 1,000 sailors graduating that day. What a wonderful event that will be on PIR day to have them all in there at once! HOOYAH!
Most of the ones shipping out to A School will do that on Saturday after PIR day. They are bussed there very early in the morning to wait for flights. But remember....plans can change....so try and stay through the weekend anyway...just in case that happens and you get more time with your sailor. You can visit at the airport with your sailor up until departure time (with an airlines gate pass....take ID to airport for all who want this pass).
