Diannep I have my fingers crossed for a letter this week, You know I will be watching my mailbox all week...
Hoping that some letters were written yesterday (Sunday is usually their writing day!) in this group and are being mailed today. Watch those mailboxes!
Ooops! Sorry~ Didn't meant to make the post so long below and pik so big! Thanks for listening, ladies! Promise not to do that again! :-)
Ok, one last dog story on my rescue yellow Lab: I had to put down my 13 yrs old Yellow Lab girl...suddenly. Seems she had cancer and I didn't know it and was suffering so much in the very end. My head was spinning...our other 2 Labs had lived to 17 and 15 before we finally had to put them down, but we were more prepared then, even though I cried for days. But this last one....I wasn't doing well. My hubby had died 7 years earlier and she was a "piece" of him. Besides being my best friend! Soooo.....in my grief, I started looking at rescue sites online. Found Labrador Rescue of Florida and seeing those dogs looking for homes put a smile back on my face...there is hope! I found my "Foster" way over in Tampa (over 4 hour drive for me one way). My sailor son (then in DEP) and I drove over and back in one day to meet/bring him home.
What a blessing he has been to me! But what a past he had. Seems he was a dog from Panama City....probably about 10 hours away from Miami. Family had owned him since a pup (he was 5 when I got him). He was a "runner" and people would return him to his vet because of tags. So....once again....he ran away and this time, was picked up by animal control, apparently. They contacted Lab Rescue, but told them they would put him down because he was now very sick...you name it, he had it, Lab Rescue begged them not to, and quickly trained an Air Force Captain in the area (missing his 2 Labs back home with his wife in another state) to be accredited to care for the dog w/Lab Rescue. He called and begged for Foster's life. They said ok, but called the next day....said he was too sick, putting him down. Once again, he begged for his life and won....thank goodness! This "angel" of a man nursed him back to health through many sleepless nights, he said. Once healthy, he was on the site, but no takers. I don't get that as he is a beautiful and wonderful dog. After having him for 5 months, man was being shipped to Afghan and had to give him to another Lab Rescue foster person. Heartbreaking for both....he was then placed with a family with a little girl In Tampa....hours away from Panama City. Seems the mom thought a fun game would be to give the dog a bone, and then tell the 3 yr old to try and get it from him. WHAT? Mom claims the dog "mouthed" her daughter (like he may bite) when daughter tried to take it away. Wow....not to bright of that lady, I say. Back he went to Lab Rescue (by the way, this dog wouldn't bite anything if his life depended on it! He is the most relaxed, docile dog I have ever seen, very submissive, not aggressive at all).
This time, to another Foster Dad with a Lab Rescue now his own. 5 months later, I found him. YAH! By the way, the Air Force Captain traced the dog to the original owners, through the vet (on tags). Talked to them. Seems that they thought they may want the dog back....they would call. He panicked as they had not taken care of the dog...he talked to the vet staff who said that they were not good owners. Called the Lab Rescue powers that be and was told that the owner had relinquished rights to the dog legally, so they couldn't get him back. Thankfully, they never called the AF Captain back. How can you just throw away a dog after having him for 4.5 years from a pup? I have no idea, but so glad that he has been mine now for over 3.5 years....he is such a blessing! Here's a pik of him!
I got a brief phone call Saturday morning but no form letter yet. Maybe it will come this week.
