As far as civilian clothes, laptops, cells. They cannot have these at RTC so you must give these to them:
1. ....at the airport when they are flying out to A School....or
2. ...if they are staying in GL for A School, once they have moved to that base (about an hour after PIR) and then have had liberty with you, they can return with them.
They cannot wear civilian clothes until they phase up at A School. so best to just give them a few that they can lock up until then...and mail more to them later.
Just want to tell you all that you can print as many of the parking (gate) passes as you need for PIR. You write in the info so everyone in your group who needs one can have one. These will be available to download 10 days before PIR.
As far as jumping onto a hotel shuttle, Sub Dad, might be hard if you aren't staying at that hotel. There is parking at the train station which is right next to RTC for those who want to park there and walk to RTC. Not a far walk.
Thanks KellyJUSSLincolmsailorMom. that did help. what about cell phones and laptops? will they be able to take them when they leave for A school? i'm thinking my son will be leaving to go to A school.
Navymom94 and charlie8/14 You have to have the gate pass, my husband is retired Navy and we had base stickers, still have to have it. Your recruit can not wear any civies, they have to earn it in "A" school or apprentice training. Hope this helps! My son grad in March if you have any other quests I will try to help , I joined this group because my freinds son will be in this PIR I am soo excited for him, he too is following his dads footsteps! HOOOYAH!
What about civ clothes for our SR's??? can we bring them anything from home to take to A school with?? im not sure that my son clothes will still fit him after boot camp. went in weighing a whopping 118, ive got a feeling hes gonna put on a few pound.
we are driving from alabama. im still looking @ hotels and have a few in mind.. It looks like a lot are staying at the Residence Inn. my son is on ship 02 Div 948is there any others in that div staying there? i would like to meet family of the other soon to Sailors that my son has spent so much time with. just ready to get everything booked.
Sub dad made me think of something, do you know if we can get on using our military IDs and give parking pass to grandma?
Great info diannep and others - only 6 week3 - wow!
Because my husband is retired military we are staying at the navy lodge
Proud Mona I booked there and the nightly rate was $109. A bit higher than others in the area, but I haven't read one single negative thing anywhere about this hotel, and I have checked lots of placed, believe me!
So, this group should be starting Training Week #1 tomorrow. Some divisions may have started this at the end of last week. Remember, there are 6 weeks of training! They are SAILORS at the end of the 6th week. HOOYAH!
Go ahead and book your hotels since there is no harm in changing/ cancelling if need be. You can wait a little longer on flight reservations if you want to, but remember that you have no change fee with Southwest into Milwaukee or Chicago-Midway. And your first 2 bags ship for free. So....if the price is right, book it! Milwaukee is 45 minutes away, closer than Midway. No traffic, car rental many times is cheaper there also. But sailors flying out to A School will be flying from OHare and Midway....so if booking out of Milwaukee, make it Sunday if possible so you can visit with your sailor until flight time. Just so you don't miss any time with your sailor. If your sailor is staying in GL for A School, remember....they get daytime liberty through Sunday....so try and book your return late Sunday or even Monday.
Hotels that we hear great reviews on are Residence Inn Waukegan (we stayed there and it was great), Springhill Suites, and Comfort Inn. All Marriotts. Ask for the Navy Grad rate. All have PIR shuttle ($3/pp each way, sailor usually rides with you for free). Residence is pet friendly for those driving and wanting to bring pets for a reunion with your sailor. These hotels are all close to Sarge's MeetandGreet (the one we N4Moms recommend---lots of info in that one). All MeetandGreets are family friendly so bring the kids!
Remember, for those who do not want to rent a car, call Sarge for your transportation needs. He offers special rates to Navy families. 847-212-0246
You can text or call. He is wonderful....such a blessing to all of the families and the sailors there in GL also.
Remember, ladies, no care packages can be sent to RTC. Uh oh! Nothing but normal-sized letters or cards. Anything larger or bulkier....will have to be opened in front of the RDCs.
A reminder to keep phones on you at all time. Some have missed calls when checking the mail or when in the bathroom. Sad....if you aren't sure your SR remembers your cell phone number, put it in each letter and ask them to memorize it! They may not have time to grab their "phone number list" when given time to use the phones.
Also, planning on bringing extras to PIR? Bring them! The Navy only guarantees entrance of the 4 on your SR's list, however....the extras should get in after a short wait for those in the list to be seated. Sometimes they don't even have to wait. Those 12 and under do not count as part of the 4 on the list. Retired military personnel do not need to be on the list...they are welcomed and honored guests! So....please bring your extras. It is a ceremony that is so very special and wonderful for all to see!
Enough info for now!
