WELCOME TO PIR 10/12/2012

OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance. Please take the time
to read the OPSEC and Community Guidelines. A quick note here: Last Names of Sailors/Recruits are not allowed on this site. If it is in your username you will need to change your username. If yours is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended. First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Melissa:  Check out Residence Inn Waukegan, Springhill Suites, and Courtyard Inn.  All close together.  Near SARGE's MeetandGreet.  About 4-5 miles from RTC.  All have PIR shuttle.  We stayed at Residence and loved it.  Free hot buffet breakfast each morning, earlier on PIR day.  Residence is also pet friendly.  They have studios and 2 bdrm 2 bth for large groups---all have full kitchens for anyone wanting to cook for their sailor.

They are all Marriotts, clean and nice.

My daughter left on the 14th of August from Cleveland MEPS, (we live in Stow) with a PIR date of Oct 12th.  I got my box 5 days ago, and I received my letter yesterday.  I have already written a letter and mailed it.  I am writing another as we speak. To Melissa- I booked 4 days at the Ramada Inn for $310.80 that includes the tax, a free continental breakfast, a free meet and greet with other PIR families, a free shuttle to the graduation, and most important, a coffee maker in the room.  I am so happy to be connecting with others that are in the same "boat" as me.  Best of luck to all of you and your recruits.   Lin

Anyone have recommendations about hotels in the area?  The ones listed in the brochure that came with the form letter don't seem to have very good reviews on the booking sites.  Just wondering if anyone had been in any of them or know of any that are not listed.  I don't need fancy - just clean, with hot water.  =)

For those of you with sailors staying in GL for A School. they will have about an hour after PIR with you, they generally have to be back at their ship on the RTC side by noon.

They will pack their rack and then be bussed (yes bussed) over to the base side, checked in etc. Once they have "all" been checked in and stowed their things, they will be given some time to call you again to come get them. That call can come anytime between 2:30 and 4:00.

Liberty on Friday will be until 10pm. On Sat and Sunday they will be able to leave by approx 6am and again must be back to their ship no later than 10pm. These times can vary slightly, but seem to be pretty standard.

I will give you a few more "tips" and "remembers" as you get closer to PIR. Nothing important just suggestion. :)

Oh, when I say "morning"...its in the wee hours...like after midnight Friday. They are bussed to the AP's (usually Midway and O'Hare) to check in and then wait for their flights. It could be anytime that day...they just bus them all at once. You are allowed to meet them at the AP and wait with them. Most airlines will grant a pass for family to go through security (with proper ID) and wait with their Sailor. He should be able to have his cell phone...lap top I am not sure. When they go to another base it is a new command and the liberty policies are different for each one. I would join the SWCC group on here and see if they know. Also, we will be forming Division Discussion next week for you all as soon as we have a good idea on all of the divisions. There will be "veteran" SPECOP moms along to help out with that as well.

Since he is going to SD...he falls under those departing the day after PIR. So, Liberty directly after PIR, he will be given a time to return that night, leave the next morning for A school...UNLESS they schedule a flight for Sunday...but next day departure is the norm.
Your SR's will most likely be able to tell you their travel plans when they make the I'm a Sailor call...at least as far as departure...but not always (I'm a side note...neber post exact times for future movement...breaks OPSEC). Mine did...but then it changed two days before PIR and he called me while I was flying to Chicago. Luckily I had booked through until Sunday as diannep and LaLa and Betsy had advised...I was set for just PIR day...figured I would just sight see...but we got two extra days of liberty. It was a Thursday PIR though on Memorial day weekend. But we have seen different departures on regular PIR's on occasion.

Those with Sailors attending A school in GL will have Liberty PIR day ( after they transfer over to TSC) as well as Saturday and Sunday.

Honorary Mom - I believe you posted that your recruit will be going to Connecticut for A School?
Those attending A school anywhere other than GL will have Liberty ON PIR day and the Navy tries to have them leave for their A school the next morning. So no Liberty on Saturday...UNLESS...they book them on a later flight for Sunday ( they fly commercial and so are subject to availability)...in which case you WOULD get Liberty on Saturday. This does not happen often...but can. So we often advise that you stay until late Sunday or Monday if funds and time allow.
I posted another reply below for you...as well as a link to a PAGE that has info you can.refer too...it's for the whole group as well :)
