OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance. Please take the time
to read the OPSEC and Community Guidelines. A quick note here: Last Names of Sailors/Recruits are not allowed on this site. If it is in your username you will need to change your username. If yours is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended. First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Still learning, not sure what I would call them but I'll think of something.

GIRL - All the sailors are proud, whether they are 800, 900, or majority of the other sailors.  So what would you use as another term to describe them?

But to clarify, in the Navy, the term "Regular" is used as a term to define the majority of the sailors.  For example if you're a  Medical officer or a supply officer then you are not a normal sailor.  Suppose your ship had a Captain (O-6) supply officer, and you had a Lieutenant (0-3) line officer (Regular officer).  The person in charge of the ship is the 0-3.  Why?  Because they're regular officer.

The term "regular", is the normal sailor talk.  As a civilian I know you are still learning and don't know that.

Gabby-navy wife - We may be able to help you figure out where your recruits "A" school is.

What is their rating (occupational speciality/job)?

Recruits recieve mail M-Sa just like we do. BUT they can only read and write on Sunday in the beginning of BC. After about the fourth week...some of the RDC's allow more time for this during the week. This is based on how the Divsion is doing.

AND..I just read this better on the RTC site so I will post it here for you.

It is from their FAQ's on their FB page.

HOW SOON CAN RECRUITS SEND/RECEIVE MAIL?

Recruits can begin receiving and writing letters the first Sunday they are in their permanent ships (barracks). They spend anywhere from one to two weeks (depending on what division they were placed into) in a different location on base. Any mail sent to them before they are even in their ships may possibly be delayed reaching them by up to three weeks. All letters must have a complete/accurate address that includes a recruit's division number. Misaddressed letters will be delayed in reaching your recruit. To ensure you have the correct address for your recruit's ship, visit our website at: www.bootcamp.navy.mil/contact_recruit.asp

We usually advise everyone to try and stay until Sunday night if time and schedule permits. Even for those who's Sailors will attend A school elsewhere (other than GL TSC).

Normally, those flying out do so the day after PIR. That is the Navy's goal. However, it depends on a lot of things. They fly commercial so flight availability is one. Is their "A" school ready for them? if not, then they might remain "on hold" at RTC until they can fly out. There can be other reasons but those are a common two.

So research, plan...and pray! It took me a while but then I settled on what I could live with and that was that. I booked through until Sunday on the advice of my PIR veteran moms (who BTW were Betsy, diannep, and LaLa... as well as JessicaB Sailor Mom). I knew that he was scheduled to leave the day after PIR (we had a Thursday PIR) and he called while I was flying over on Tuesday to tell me that he was now not leaving until Sunday. Extra Liberty!

Most new Sailors will not know there itinerary until a few days before PIR...

TMM - Sailors at Great Lakes "A" school must return every night after Liberty on PIR weekend. So no overnight Liberty (if that is what you were asking :-D). It is 22:00 hours - 10PM ..but that can be changed at any time.

ellen0502 will have more info about that as her Sailor is schooling there.

When do the recruits find out where they are going to A school at? Also do the recruits receive letters everyday or do they only receive them on Sundays?

Usually, I call them "Regular" Divsions! But still not happy with that one either...Free Smiley Courtesy of www.millan.net

Thanks Craig but I would call them proud sailors instead of normal... Kinda touchy right now sorry. Glad you could clarify the difference for me

GIRL - In boot camp they have two special groups.

The 900 divisions, for the performers.  Band, Choral, Staff, Flags, Drill.

The 800 division for the special OPS.  They are seperated out since they have different physical requirements than normal sailors.

All the rest are the normal sailors.  The numbers start with 001 at the start of the fiscal year (Oct 1st) and just clicks up.  Last year it ended at 372.
