This is the final test for your recruits.  When they pass this, they are sailors and trade in their recruit cap for their sailor cap in a capping ceremony afterwards. The ship they do this on was designed by Disney, so it is very realistic. During…Continue

Hey, I am not doing this by myself guys!!!!!!!  We are all fighting for the same thing.  Understanding what our SR are going through.  I would actually like to be a little fly on the wall in some of these divisions.  Knowing me, I would probably get squashed by a mean RDC!!!

Arwen- thanks for clearing my mind. It is difficult without any information to be a rational mom, I do understand why some get calls and others don't. Just ready for my call too!

And thank you for all of the light you shed on us still "newbees" to the Navy life.

himmie...you might have something there and you live close enough....start a BC for loved ones to gain the "real" experience while their SR is at Great Lakes! LOL!  It might make the time go faster and whip me in two shape...two birds, one stone.

I think we need to experience boot camp to fully understand what our SR are going through!!! Any one in with me on this??????

Himmie, if a sailor does not have a designated school by PIR, they are sent to seamanship school  - a two week course in advanced seamanship, after which they are sent to the fleet to work as deckhands. They also do this if they fail out of A school. After one year as an "undesignated" deckhand, sailors are given the chance to try again for a school. That's what my son is doing right now. He pulled a stupid and took too long to get through IT A school, and was dropped the day before he would have graduated. He was given a choice of three schools (yeoman, aviation electronics and one other) but chose to be a deckhand for a while, to clear his mind of school stuff before he tries again.

Those who are getting calls in the 2/18 PIR group are getting them for two reasons. Some are getting security calls, their recruits are sat down at a desk and given a list of information to get from their parents. It's usually addresses and phone numbers, additional contact names, old employer names, etc. They need this information to get their security clearance for those schools that require it.

The others are individuals who earned calls. RDCs sometimes award a call for outstanding performance in an inspection, usually something hard to earn. In my son's division it was shoe shining. Anyone who could get an "outstanding" score on thier shoe-shine got a free call home. Only 3 out of about 80 recruits earned the call. They do this to "encourage" better performances by the entire group.

When we got married, Navy wasn't even in our heads. Once our wedding was over, he wanted a career finally so he joined. I'm so very proud of him, but it's so hard that we just got married and didn't even have time to enjoy it. But hey, that's the Navy life for ya! And I'm a damn proud wife!
