Most divisions begin with 88 recruits. Usually within days they are down a few recruits, because of those who had problems with paperwork, failed drug tests, confessed to some medical issue during the "moment of truth" or, rarely, found to be pregnant (ladies only, obviously).

A few more leave during the next few weeks, the stress may bring unknown underlying physical conditions to the surface, and some simply can't handle the stress and have mental breaks. It's important that these recruits are found early, because if they have these kinds of breaks later, while in the fleet, it could endanger their lives, or the lives of their shipmates.

When they begin running and doing a lot of marching they begin to get leg injuries. Sprained ankles, shin splints, torn ACLs, even broken legs are relatively common.  Most divisions lose one or two recruits to these injuries. Some are put in holding to heal, then are returned to training with a new division later at the same point in training they were in when they were injured. Those deemed too badly injured to have a fast recovery and return to training are sent home to heal, and are usually allowed to try again in six months.

There are also academic/performance holds. Recruits who don't pass their academic exams or other tests, such as safe weapons handling and swimming,  may be put into holding for additional training or "ASMOed" (put back a week or two) to another division, to give them another chance to try again.

Occasionally a recruit will be ASMOed as a punishment for an infraction. It's usually for something fairly minor, the kind of poor judgment calls common to young immature men and women. It's often the kind of thing that isn't a big deal in the civilian world (being caught in a closet with a member of the opposite sex, even if nothing happened) but in the Navy is severely frowned apon.

By the fourth week the division begins getting more recruits, those recruits who were dropped from earlier divisions after being injured or ill.

If a division graduates with 88 recruits, it's probably not the SAME 88 recruits. Ten to 20 of them were roated into thier division as others leave. Some divisons graduate with fewer than 70 recruits.
