This is the final test for your recruits.  When they pass this, they are sailors and trade in their recruit cap for their sailor cap in a capping ceremony afterwards. The ship they do this on was designed by Disney, so it is very realistic. During…Continue

I got a phone call today it was only 5 minutes and my husband was really sick he said a lot of people are sick and he sounded really down in the dumps but i just reassured him that i am proud of him and i Love him  very much. It was really hard not to cry but i had to stay strong for him so we could have a phone conversation.

A PIR with 14 divisions is large, but not huge. Whether or not "extra guests" will fit entirely depends on how many new sailors' families decide to go. I would guess that the Christmas recruits will get more family members to come, because they missed the holidays.

One trick to get extra guests in (guaranteed) is to find a recruit who has fewer than four people coming to PIR, and have them write down the name of your "extra" guests as one of their four. Just be sure that you know the name of the recruit that wrote their name down! They won't let you in unless you know your sponsoring recuit's name.

Recruits are required to submit their guest list at about week 5, so you have time to work this out with your recruit and your family.

Weather update in Northern Illinois.  For the next five days Snow, Snow and more Snow.  Only day it isn't suppose to snow is Thursday.  Looks like our recruits will be shoveling this week.

For G&G sailors who are NOT going to Great Lakes for A school, some are sent out Friday afternoon, others don't leave until Saturday, and a few don't even ship out until Sunday. The G&G sailors who won't ship out until Saturday will have Friday liberty, those who ship out Sunday will have Friday and Saturday liberty.

PIR weekend overnight liberty is rare for those who age G&G to Great Lakes A school, and never granted to sailors who have not yet transferred to the A school base.

Those who stay at RTC for a few days after PIR weekend are NOT on hold. They simply haven't finished processing out of RTC yet. Usually  by PIR only a few divisions have thier orders, and no one can go anywhere until they have their orders. Those last few days are spent learning the process of transferring, and learning the Navy way to pack (just like they learned the Navy way to fold, make beds, etc). Once they have their orders, they can transfer.

Remember, PIR is NOT a graduation ceremony, it is a "pass in review" which is different. It does not signify that they are actually finished training (many divisions still have several days of training remaining after PIR). A PIR is formal military ceremony held for the public to show off, in this case the latest batch of recruits. PIRs are also held for change of command ceremonies and other formal military events.

There is no PIR or other public ceremony for A-school graduations, just a simple formation and recognition for honor graduates.

Sailors on A school hold will live at their school barracks until a class opens for them. At Great Lakes, for the first 6 weeks (Phase I) they are restricted to base unless they have a liberty buddy (weekends only), have a strict curfew, and must wear their uniforms at all times. After 6 weeks they reach Phase II and are allowed civilian clothes and have more freedoms but still have a curfew. After 12 weeks they make Phase III and can have overnight liberty.

When they finally start school they begin again at Phase I and have to work their way back up.

In Pensacola Corry Station, it's 2-3 weeks per phase, not 6 weeks. It's different at most bases, depending on many factors.

Congrats to all who received their form letters today. It felt so good to get that confirmation of their PIR date and ship/division number.  Has anyone received a letter from their recruit yet? I saw that someone got a phone call already.

Comment by himmiemom on December 20, 2010 at 6:53pm

Thanks diannep.  I am also hoping for a phone call on Christmas, but I am not going to count on it.  I don't want to get my hopes up and than not get the call.  I don't want to ruin Christmas for the other kids either.  I know being military this is the sacrifice they make and my son is okay with that.  I was until this week.  He is missing the holidays plus his brothers 16 bday 12/23 and my bday 1/5.  I am just crossing off the days on my calendar till I see him at PIR.

Division 804 will PIR Feb 11,

Division 084 will probably PIR Feb 18

And that is going to be confusing for people.

There are a lot fewer divisions this year than last. Last year they were already in the 100s - in fact, my son was in Division 100.

Woohoo I finally received my form letter today...So glad I was off work today. And i'm finally seeing some others on ship 9 div 70 I've been wondering if the recruiter gave me the wrong address. My son didn't say much he seemed really happy processing was about over and the real fun was about to begin. Those three little lines sure did put a huge smile on my face. Now for the travel plans.

ProudNavyWife - It would be nearly impossible to track everyone down..I don't think you realize JUST how massive it is..TRUST ME. Every Sailor looks EXACTLY the same..unless they're your own..for some reason if they're your own sailor..you're drawn to them IMMEDIATELY. Mine was MA(Master at Arms) For his DIV...he was right behind the Sticks(Flag Carriers) in marching order. The second his Division marched through that door, Literally, he was DIV 307, and when 305 was infront of where we were, I could see all the way back to 307 and pinpoint EXACTLY where he was..
