Ladies as diannep said, you will be able to communicate with your son a lot more once out of boot camp. I suggest loading Skype on your computer. It is free. My son calls me via Skype 2 times a week. All you need is a microphone and camera on your computer. It is so neat because I can see him when we talk. I feel like he is next-door. I think it is really worth having. My husband talks to our son for hours sometimes. It has really brought them closer.
I heard that Windows Live Messenger has video calling too.
MySailorMyHero: Hopefully they are allowed to practice their float. They must pass all before they can do BattleStations--so they have to have passed the swim part by then. We just had a lady in the 6/17 PIR group whose son struggled with this. She was so excited when he called at the beginning of the week to tell her that he FLOATED! So he was on to BattleStations and yesterday became a sailor. So don't worry....he has time! PRAY HARD! :-)
Ladies, as fireteamleaderwife said below: When communication is re-established with them once they are at A School, it is wonderful! That is why it is very nice to be able to give them their cell/laptops at the airport. I was still out of communication with mine until I mailed him his cell at A School (missed the airport visit with him). He called me a couple of times from a friend's cell until then, and had a phone card, but the phones were a distance from his barracks. So....get ready....you will be back in touch with your loved ones once at A School and maybe even when in transit there!
Lady-What is his rate? I saw he is going to Pensacola. Cell phones are allowed to go to "A" school with them. You can give them to him at the airport when you see him off. Saturday Departure Sailors (what they used to call GradnGos) usually arrive at the airport between 1-2 AM. Then they prep and wait to fly out. It could be anytime during the day...but we can discuss those details later. You may meet him there and spend time with him until he leaves. There you can transfer cell and anything else he says he is allowed to take.Laptops are usually allowed too. You will definitley have more contact with him.
My son is in Pensacola and I speak with him daily (been there 2 weeks.)
Ladylancelot, I lile dianneps suggestion. I think it would be a good idea to contact the Navy Chaplain just so that he knows what is going on. If you are planning on telling your son after Battle Stations or PIR your son might need to speak to the Chaplain.
