The RDCs check open any letter that looks like it has more than just a letter inside. However, they definitely don't read their recruits mail. Some of the guys got 15 letters at once. Just think, 15 times 80 =___

I am glad to know they read the letters anymore, my SR did say please don't send pictures they don't like it..LOL

I would have say no IT for a colored envelope but for the ones that play music it is possible. I have heard of a couple of recruits who did push-ups until the battery on the musical card died. It was a long time lol. Another recruit got a care package with candy and cookies from his mom, his whole division had to do IT while the RDC's ate the cookies. Obviously a mom who had not been to this site :-)

Tkank you keger and everyone else for your thoughts and prayers.  We are firmly decided not to tell...and hoping no-one else mentions it in their letters to him.  My dilemma now is how and when to tell him, especially since we will be spending so little time with him that day.  How many hours will we have with him and what happens when he gets to A School?  Will we have full contact then, by cell and internet or will he still be restricted?  I can't imagine receiving such horrible news and then being isolated and unable to get information on her progress.  That is why I chose not to tell him...believing it would be even more painful for him not knowing, like the rest of us do, what is happening with her minute by minute.

The RDCs don't read the recruits letters anymore. All they do is check for photographs inside the envelope. If there are photographs the RDCs open the letters. This is done to make sure there are no indecent photos. They are very strict about what a recruit can have with them. (I won't tell you what is done with the nude photos of girlfriends)

do the RS really have to do IT if the letter comes in a colored envelop? or plays music?

I really don't think they read the letters we write anymore. Maybe they do that when they are deployed? At bootcamp they will only make them open them in front of the RDC if they are bulky and look like they contain more than just a letter. My Sailor's mail was never opened before she got it. At least as far as we know.

LadyLancelot, I am so sorry, we will keep your family in our prayers. I was telling my husband about your situation(ex Navy submariner) and he said that they read our letters before the recruits get them so if you did tell him they probably won't let it go thru anyway. He said you should probably contact the American Red Cross their number is on the form letter and they can help you. He thinks it would be best for you not to tell him until after boot. My husband's Grandma passed away while they were out to sea several years back and his mom wrote to tell him about her and they took the letter, he never found out until they were back from patrol. Please know we are all praying for your neice and your family.

Ladylancelot,  I'm so sorry for what you and your family are going through.  I am in agreement with the other ladies.  Your SR needs to stay focused right now.  We asked our SR before going in to BC if any emergency happened what should we do and my SR's response was to wait until PIR.  There isn't anything that they can do while in BC.  But please know that by sharing it with us, you will have many prayers going out for your niece.  WE will carry the burden with you and lift her up to God for a speedy recovery.

Lady:  Sandy, Lala, fireteamleaderwife, and I are all veterans on this site...so I hope that what we shared with you regarding this situation helps!  Seems that we are all kind of in agreement that if you can keep it from him until after BattleStations, it would be better for him in his training.  But again...has to be what you feel in your heart.  We are just trying to share from the "Navy side" what he is up against in bootcamp from the experiences our sailors had when there and what we have learned from being active on this site.
