thanks for the correction Mark.....it is Clinton, not Kingston.....and Bellingham would be a closer airport and then no need for ferries. ....my son flies in there from Hawaii when on leave....easy sneezy.

Hi allie1928, Whidbey is so beautiful. My son is still stationed there, but about to leave at the end of this month. We went there for a week his second year there. We stayed in Navy Lodge because Navy Gateway Inn and Suites was undergoing a remodel. The lodge is on the other base up there, about 5 mins away, but if I had the choice I would stay at Gateway Inn and Suites since it is right there on the main base near your sailor. Check out my own page here, you will see a lot of the pictures we took while on the island. I would move there tomorrow if I could, so beautiful. My sailor has loved being there for his 4 years. We drove from Seatac to the island since most of the sailors do too, it is just quicker since you have to wait for ferries, and can take a while. It is a 2 1/2 hour drive to the island, but Deception pass bridge makes it all worth it. I can not say enough wonderful things about that whole area, you will love it. Any questions do not hesitate to get in touch, what I don't know, my sailor does.

Thank you so much ladies for the great information!!!  Much appreciated!

That would be the Mukilteo-Clinton ferry to the south end of Whidbey Island.  The north end of Whidbey is accessible by bridge through Mt. Vernon and Anacortes, and would avoid the ferry.  That route would be out of your way if you were coming from Seattle, but would be the quickest way from the Bellingham airport.  Bellingham is often a better and cheaper option than flying through SeaTac if you're heading to Whidbey.  It's worth checking out.

Welcome Allie! yes, you catch a ferry to Whidbey, but not in Seattle. Drive north to Mukilteo and use the Mukilteo-Kingston Ferry...then drive north along the island to get to the Navy base. Sorry....don't know much about accommodations there, but there's a few 'Whidbey experts' here that can answer that for you. August should be beautiful! Congrats to your boy :-)
