Prayer for Yvonne's Feet and Legs

For those of you who have been praying for Yvonne and me through Yvonne's surgery and recovery, please pray for us. Tonight we really feel the need for prayer. Yvonne has been walking a lot and I've been posting about it with a lot of excitement. But today she was noticing that her right foot seemed to scrape when she took a step. She tries really hard to walk heel to toe like normal, but it bothered her the way her foot was acting. We also noticed that she is having trouble raising her foot…See More

Appointment with Yvonne's surgeon in the morning

I have a prayer request for those of you who have been praying for Yvonne and me. Tomorrow we go see Yvonne's surgeon (perhaps for the last time). This recovery has been very hard and the longer it goes the harder it seems to be. Not just physically, but emotionally and mentally as well. Tonight Yvonne and I are praying that Dr. Shuff will be able to give us some good news. To give us some hope moving forward. We really need some encouragement from him, if at all possible. Please pray for us…See More

Yvonne walking over 1/3 of a mile!

Yvonne is still fighting with pain; however, she is getting stronger and stronger every day! She is up to walking over 1/3 of a mile each day. We are doing the walking every morning at the lake near our house. We measured off the distance beginning with 1/4 of a mile and then increased the distance every few days. She was really surprised when I told her that 1/3 of a mile is the distance completely around the block by our house! It is way more pretty and fun to walk around the lake. People…See More

Profile Information

A little about me:
I'm a retired Navy chaplain. And Yvonne is the wife of a retired Navy chaplain. :) Together we spent twenty years in the military. I spent ten years as a chaplain, and prior to that, ten years as an electronics technician.

Yvonne and I open our home to young military men and women stationed in the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area. We like to think of our home as a "home away from home" for servicemen and women.

I originally joined the Navy right out of high school and went to boot camp in San Diego, CA. I came into the Navy thinking I wanted to be an electronics technician on a nuclear powered submarine..

In ET "A" School I discovered I really wasn't interested in electronics and my grades showed it. So I spent the next six years as an electronics technician stationed on a satellite communications station in Hawaii. Six months into that tour Yvonne and I got married and she became a Navy wife.

After my tour of duty I got out, went to Bible College and Seminary, and put my paperwork in to become a chaplain. I was commissioned as an Ensign and served for seven years in the reserves, and then on active duty again. The Navy sent me back to Hawaii. "Aw shucks..."

We've been in Virginia Beach for a little over sixteen years now, ministering to servicemen and women and their families, in our home.

Anyway, that's a little bit of our story. Check out our web site and blog if you want to know more...

Driving for the first time since her surgery!

Posted on August 7, 2022 at 9:10pm 6 Comments

Yvonne had another good week. She walks about a quarter of a mile now, and this week she did it five days in a row. But, here is more exciting news, today after church we went to an empty parking lot and she got behind the wheel of our car for the first time. Everything worked fine and she drove us home! She enjoyed being able to drive again. Praise the Lord for another first! God is restoring her to health and healing her wounds. Thank you Jesus! Unfortunately, she still experiences…

Compression fracture in Yvonne's vertebrae

Posted on July 16, 2022 at 10:04pm 4 Comments

Please keep Yvonne in your prayers. When we saw the surgeon on the 6th of July he showed us the x-rays and said Yvonne has a compression fracture of one of her vertebrae. He said there is nothing that can be done except wait for it to heal. And it looked like it was already doing that. But, she is having quite a bit of extra pain in her back the last few days. She couldn't even finish her physical therapy session on Thursday because her back hurt. So if you could, please pray for her.…

Hi!

 Thanks for adding me

My son was in Little Creek and is now teaching at the schoolhouse. He will probably be back in a few years.

Hello, John and Yvonne-

Thank you for reaching out. My son is likely to be in Goose Creek, SC for around 18 months or so (if all goes well!), so not likely he will be in Norfolk anytime soon. Nonetheless, when my father was in the Navy in the early 50's (Little Creek), there was a wonderful couple who had him (and fellow sailors) over numerous times. The support was wonderful for him! Best wishes to you this holiday season and thank you for all you do!

Hi. My son said he might be interested, so could you send me your cell number so I can text it to him? Thanks so much. He's on the USS Bataan. How would he get to your house? He's thinking of buying a bicycle, as the base is so big. Thanks again.

Hi Yvonne! Thank you so much for checking on us. My nephew graduated boot camp on Jan. 4th. We went up for four day's and had an awesome time with him. He proposed to his girl that weekend on top of the Willis Tower. It was perfect. Right now he is in A school at Great Lakes for about 8 months and then to Virginia or San Diego for C School for FC. Not sure as of yet where he will go. I know at this point he is hoping for some place WARM! Poor Florida boy is having a hard time in that cold.

Thank you so much,

Rain

Hello Yvonne and John,

Thank you for asking about my sailor.  He is doing very well on the ship.  In fact he was just named Junior Sailor of the Quarter!  He has been deployed since Oct. 19, and they have only visited 1 port.  He does truly enjoy his job, so doesn't mind being out to sea.  We do get to talk to him about once every 3 weeks for a short conversation.  Unless they are running silent which they seem to do quite a bit.  Then we don't even get an e-mail.  As the end gets closer, I am getting excited to see him.  Now we are just trying to figure out how do we get on base to welcome home the ship!

Hi there, Yvonne & John!

Thank you for the message and the kind invitation extended to my son. He's not having the best of times right now and it may be good for him to get out to some normal surroundings. I'll be sure to pass on your invitation to him and I'll get back to you.

Thanks again for the kind offer.
