Civil War Reenactment Photos

Here are some of the photos from the Civil War Reenactment we went to in Yorktown, VA. It was really cold that day, but we all had a good time anyway! After spending the day watching the war and interacting with the soldiers on both sides, we went to Andrea's Italian Restaurant (best pizza in Hampton Roads) for pizza, then to (believe it or not) Coldstone Creamery for ice cream.

Missing You

I never imagined that I would be missing my son this much. As an older recruit with a wife and young son, we had already gone through those rights of passage and his life was very much independent of ours. But I'm finding that the longer I go without seeing him the more I miss him. There's that mother thing that just won't let go-as I'm sure so many of you understand. Is he homesick(that's pretty much a given, I guess), is he sleeping at nights, is he eating well? Just all…

got the "box" today

was doing pretty well until "the box" came in the mail today. There is no letter or adress with it. Does this come later. Did anyone else find this difficult to receive???

Thank you to everyone

Thank you to everyone who left me such encouraging messages. I am sorry it has taken me a while to get back in touch. On Tuesday, I came home to find "the box" waiting on our porch. I took it to my daughter-in-law's home for her. Even though I didn't open it, just seeing that box made everything so real. Then earlier tonight my daughter-in-law called me and said that she got the official letter in the mail with info and she was so happy that my son had a few lines written on the bottom. As of… Continue

What about the Passport?

I know I am supposed to try to find the answer to my question in the existing blogs and forums. I tried. So, My son has been told to get a passport. He is in San Diego. For some reason I find unfathomable, he doesn't know where to go or how to accomplish this. Also, we are all wondering just why he might need one, although I can speculate a LOT of good reasons. He is marginally communicative, frustrating his Dad & me.

Went to my sons grad in Great Lakes March 19th ship09 Div131. It was both joyful and sad. Joyful because my son has turned into a fine man. But sad because my boy is gone. My mom told me this would happen. Both my bothers were in the Navy. I'm still crying:( By the way what is with this no hug thing? Continue

Accomidations at Great Lakes

My son graduates sometime in May 2010, I have never traveled to Illinois and need some help.

I am driving there (about 10 hours) but I dont want to drive my car to the PIR.

I need some suggestions (within distance from Naval Training Facility) on accomidations for the weekend. Even if you tell me which places to avoid at least I will know where to begin. Thank you

Tips

Hi all, i just wanted to share some tips with you all. When your SR calls, just listen, their time is very short on the phone. If you have a lot of yes and no answer questions, send checklists instead of asking them in a letter, you'll get more info from your SR since they will have more time to write. Only send letters, dont send boxes, unless you are specifically asked by your SR, especaially females as they will want their makeup for pics and graduation, and those that wear contacts will… Continue

Time is of the essence

Well my husband joined the U.S. Navy March 1st. He leaves September 9th. I sat here and thought that 6 months was a long time to be able to spend with him...boy was I wrong! Between us working and taking care of the house and my dad that was just diagnosed with Renal failure, it seems like time is just slipping away!! Its already been a month and it seems that my time with him is more important now then ever! I have never been separated for this long and I honestly dont know what I am going to… Continue

So very proud of my son...now come the tears

Ok Moms....Am I wimpy or what? My son doesn't leave for bootcamp until July and already I find myself getting choked up. My family and I are so proud of him. Being in the Navy will give him some great opportunities and also give him an appreciation for our country. My father was a World War II Navy Seabee and so it is with great pride that my son will follow his grandfather in the same military branch.

The question I have is: How do I stay strong for him? I feel like an idiot when my… Continue

SO PROUD!!!

My son knew from the time he was a soph in HS that he wanted to be in the navy and went as far as putting the navy emblem on his class ring (he graduated in '09). I was nervous at first when he said 'military" but he was still very young and thought maybe he would change his mind. He didn't. He's always been ADHD and had a very difficult time with school so I was worried about him passing the academic part of it. He flunked the ASVAB twice but was determined to get in. One of his HS teachers (… Continue
