My son just left yesterday for BC, and I am wondering about his A-PACT program. The Chief Petty Officer at his recruiter's office told him that he came in under the PACT program and it was really the best way to go because he could try each rate before deciding on his job. My son wants to be an AO, but if he went in as that he wouldn't ship out until May 2nd. The Cheif told him if he went PACT then he could ship earlier and still get AO. How long will it take for him to become an AO? I don't want him to get discouraged.

Do you mean May 2nd of this year? If AO is what your son really wants, I would say sign as that.

Going A-PACT isn't a bad thing. He would get some exposure to different jobs, and then after about a year of so would be able to choose out of a few choices (it is not a given that he would be able to pick AO).

Yes, may 2 of this year. The Cheif told him it was definite he could have AO, and said nothing about it taking a year. Well he is A-PACT now, so I hope he doesn't get discouraged whrwhe finds out it will be awhile.

Hey Angella,

I was reading some of your posts and wondered how your son was doing in the A-PACT program?  My son is set to graduate in a few weeks and he signed up for this rate.  How has it been going for him?  Where did he get is first duty station?  I am reading alot of different opinions on the A-PACT program and wondering if that was a good choice for my son.  He didn't know what he wanted to do and wanted to go to BC as soon as possible so he chose this rate.  Any info would be helpful, thanks in advance.

I read somewhere that, unfortunately, Angella's son did not pass his initial run at bootcamp and was separated. He may try again at a later date.

ok..thanks so much...do you have any insight about the APACT?

good luck to him, they said the same thing to my son 3 years ago, however they lied, now he's doing a job he hates and the only good thing is he has 1 year to go if he wants to get out. I hope your son gets better results then we did. Sorry about the bad news

We still have hope that he will be able to sit for the rate he wants ( I have no idea if I said that right! This navy speak is new to me. Lol) in a year. Hoping things work out the way he wants but he may find something else he likes better? God is in control and He knows what is best. So for now I will not worry about it. I have made sure he understands that every job is important and to do anything he is told like it is super important because all the jobs together is what makes it work. He agrees with that. Hoping he will keep that attitude!
The Chief told him that during the last two weeks before he left. And he can't wait as he is already at BC. But he is planning on staying in, not coming out until his 20 yes is up like my brother. He is 2.5 yrs from retirement. So, he didn't think that is going to be an issue.
My husband joined as pact program and they lied to your son. Once he’s done with school and then stationed at his command then the year wait starts until he can pick his job but he only gets to pick from what’s available at that time. He also has to do a bunch of training while at his command to get qualifications from my understanding he needs to complete these qualifications to choose a job and if he doesn’t choose within two years I believe he’s kicked out. Also his A school will be around a month long so he won’t have the schooling others do he will learn on the job. And I believe the 20years and retirement is not offered anymore as of January 2018
I looked it up and there have been changed to retirement options, but I couldn't find anything saying the 20 year thing was over. My brother is an Cheif Petty Officer, I will have to ask him. Also on a Navy site it was saying they high year thing was 8 yes to make e-4, if not then you got kicked out. Not sure if I am looking at the wrong thing, but again, something I check out with my brother.
Sadly it doesn't shock me that they liked to him.

Hi, i just got a letter from my son saying that he cannot be a MA because he doesnt have a license, so now he is unassigned and will be going to the fleet after BC. Im assuming its under A-PACT as he said it would be avaition jobs that he will be doing. His recruiter and MEPS never said anything when he signed up!! So now he's upset because he had a direction of what he wanted to do and now he can't. does anyone have any ideas as to what he can do before he goes to Fleet.
