My arrived at basic ten days ago and still no letter. My understanding was that there would be a form letter sent with his address on it, not by him necessarily. Then the Navy family guide says recruits themselves send a letter the first week. Well, I haven't received any letter yet and I can't stop worrying about it. I have visions of my boy wondering, "Why hasn't mom sent me any mail?" ugh. Anyway, is it a form letter or a personal letter? When should it be here? I have a friend whose son left the same week and she got her letter several days ago.

first letter is a form letter but some recruits write a couple sentences on back. the form letter will contain his address and graduation date in it. start writing your letters now and as soon as you receive form letter you can mail them out. i would number and date your letters sometimes they don't get them in order or our are too busy to read them but for the recruits mail call is the best part of their day. it should be here soon. stay positive. I haven't received my letter yet either (my sailor left March 10th) but his wife received her's today! I will admit I'm depressed not being able to see his handwriting, as bad as it is, but so glad at least someone has had contact from him. I'm hoping I'll get a letter tomorrow.
You will be shocked when you see the handwriting! My son has the worst handwriting and when we received the form letter I could not believe how neat the handwriting was. It will amaze you!
Our son left on the 19th.....got the box but no form letter. Getting anxious!
Thank you.....thinking about calling the recruiter today. Our son left March 19, still no letter.
Yes, the recruiter can sometimes give the correct address a few days after arrival, but wait on the form letter before sending letters unless it has been two full weeks (14 days) since your recruit arrived at the RTC without a form letter. The average time to receive the form letter for one with a recruit in a regular division is 10 days after arrival and most will have the form letter on or before 14 days after arrival, which is why we say it is fine to get the address from the recruiter if 14 days have passed without the form letter.
Reasons to wait on The Form Letter:
1. The PAO at the RTC asks that loved ones wait on the form letter before mailing letters. See http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/fam_guide.asp.
2. The recruiter does not always give the right address and letters that do not have the correct address may be returned or may be delayed several weeks in getting to your recruit since it will not be a high priority for those in the mail room to look up the correct information.
3. Even if you do have the correct information, your recruit will not receive letters that are mailed before receiving the form letter much quicker, if at all, than letters mailed after receiving the form letter because recruits do not receive mail until they are in their permanent ship and a Recruit Mail Petty Officer is trained. The first Mail Call is on day 1-3 or 1-4 DOT.

Note: If it has been at least 2 calendar weeks since your recruit arrived at the RTC and you do not have a form letter, then you can call the recruiter and get the address and mail letters to your recruit, but be sure to double-check the address against those at http://bootcamp.navy.mil/contact_recruit.asp or Ship/Division--How it Works.
Thank you. Called the recruit and left a message this morning. Day 15 today and no form letter. Letters are piling up here and Loving Mom is hitting "stress levels" higher than wanted. I will feel so much better when we receive the form letter.
I just called and left a message with the recruiter.
We received the form letter regarding graduation on Thursday
Is PIR 05/29/2015 group out yet? My son left on March 25th but when I broke down and emailed the recruiter a few days ago, he said my SR is graduating May 29th Ship 3 USS Hopper DIV 188. He went in as a Nuke so maybe that's why? Still no letter so I am just getting a little anxious to write him.
My daughter's recruiter gave me her PIR date May 29th div 192.
