Lowering of Flag Ceremony Every Evening At Dusk & history of the Base

It's well worth taking the time to see the Flag Lowering Ceremony!

THE BUILDING OF LEMOORE NAS

In 1954, the Navy searched the Northern California-Nevada area for land to build a master jet air station - one with congestion free air space.

Lemoore was chosen because of its central location, good weather for flying, relatively inexpensive land and the nearby accommodations. Construction started in 1958. With base housing, administration facilities and the flight training areas in operation, the air station was commissioned on July 8, 1961.

Located in the San Joaquin Valley approximately 40 miles south of Fresno, CA, nearly 5,000 military and 1,000 civilian employees work onboard, with an average payroll of $120 million per year.

NAS Lemoore's primary mission is to support fleet carrier squadrons. The heart of this mission is the operations area. Designed to support more than twenty fleet squadrons, it serves as a master training center for carrier-based strike fighter squadrons of the United States Pacific Fleet.

Duty weekend means they have to stick around and their duty section does the watches for that weekend.  They won't be on watch 24/7, but each one takes their shift.  They have to stick close even when not on watch just in case they are called to duty.

I have a question if they have duty on weekends what do they do

Oh wait, I take that back, they made her stay there another week after graduation, I got that part wrong.  But that was only because she had to wait for the money for the trip to get into her account.  They wont let you leave until you have been paid your travel money.  Those who graduated and flew out left the next day.

SouthCarolina.... let's see, she graduated on Monday and left on Wednesday, I believe.  She took the 10 all the way across, stayed in East Texas, West Texas, Arizona, and then with her grandparent in Los Angeles.  She actually did it in 4 days of driving about 8-9 hours per day.  She took a few days of leave to visit some relatives, and then up to Lemoore, which is another 2.5 hours from LA.  I think the Navy gave her a week to do it, plus she added 3 days of leave.  I was nervous about a girl driving across country by herself, but she is 21 and used to doing her own thing :-)  She stayed in hotels with  inside hallways and drove during daylight hours.  Didn't stop at shady looking places.  She did visit the Alamo and a few other 'touristy' places though.  As far as California emissions.. you are right, but that is only when you are going to register the car in California... I would advise against doing that because it is super expensive and the whole smog thing is a pain.  Like I said, I'm pretty sure military can keep their car registered in their state of legal residency, which in your daughters case is South Carolina.  We lived in California all our lives until about a year ago and their registration is outrageous.  Check with her insurance company though, I'm pretty sure she'll have to change her insurance to California, but not her registration.  My daughter has a truck too... Ford F150 4WD... a gas guzzler!  But she loves it :-)

@ Jilll sorry so many questions but was there anything she had to do to her truck like the omissions for being in Cali. Someone told me that Cali is real struck on pollution control and your be hole has to be up to standards that u have to get it inspected and make changes if it isn't right. Is that true? Let me know. Thanks

@ Jill. My daughter wants to know did your daughter leave Pensacola straight after a school graduation and went straight to Cali for c school or did she come home first then go to C school??? I think my daughter is doing c school there and being stationed there also. Which way did she travel to get out there? Thanks

@ Jill. Wow Ty so much for the information u have eased my mind alot and my daughters. I was worried about her driving so far. Tell me how your daughter did on her driving all the way by herself. Which way did she come? Thanks so much
